Since we started talking about the holidays....
For the last several years I have volunteered to answer childrens' letters to Santa Claus through NY Cares. When I can, I try to respond to two children, a younger child and a teenager.
How it works is, you registater through nycares.org and select the number of letters you want. You receive the child's letter in the mail and try to fulfill his/her holiday wish(within reason of course). I really love doing this. I try to fill the box with little things as well so the child has more than one gift on Christmas morning. If anyone would like more info. you can FM me.
I am NO way affiliated with this organization, I just find it rewarding and have friends and family sign up.

I did this for the 1st time last year and really liked doing it--it was so rewarding to know you gave a child a good Christmas. I will do it again and most of my family wants to.

I think it is so great that people want to help others. I know that the holidays can be tight, but when it comes down to it, I know that my family and I have a lot more then the children do.

I am going to e-mail my family and friends. I got them to do it last year. Last year my brother and sister-in-law signed up for a child. the child asked for a bike. They really couldn't afford it. They called the social worker who told them to do what they could afford. They got some other people to join in and bought the little gilr a bike and a helmet.

That is so great!!!
I email all my friends and family every year. I hope at least some of them participate!

my mil does this...
the first year the children asked for books so she sent books and few other goodies
well they wreite to her every year asking for MORE! last yeear they asked her for PS2! and things for their brothers and sisters!!!!!
she was like - uhhhhh - arent these supposed to be small things?

I do something similar through my Church. we have an "angel tree" with kids names on it from the neighborhood. they are the not so fortunate kids and its so sad to see the things they ask for...a new jacket, a CD, an action figure, etc. it's always something that i usually take for granted and reminds me that there are those in the world that are FAR less fortunate than myself. i always pick at least 2 kids names and wrap them really pretty so that they have something to open. alot of people will just buy the gift and drop it off at the Church, but I like to make sure they get that REAL Christmas feeling. it makes me feel so good and i wish i could do more to help them...
