Since you all have such great advice - more help needed for overnight care

Ok, I need help with knowing what to do about the overnight whining/yelping/howling in the crate. The first night home, Rocky slept all night but it was because he was so tired from a crazy day. The next night was worse than any night ever with DS as an infant. He howled for 40 minutes, then slept for 30 and so it went for the WHOLE night! Granted, he was sick... because he is now in the NSAL hospital but I need to prepare better.

Anything I can do to make the crate a happier place?? And to get the puppy to sleep more?

And from my other post, alot of you said not to use wee wee pads or newspaper but even overnight? I remember with my jack russell, during the day I took him out every 20-40 minutes and he was 90% housebroken in a week but overnight was an issue. Thats why he ended up in bed with me, it solved that problem. But this new puppy will be too big for that solution and I want to reserve that special right for my first dog anyway.

So if anyone has crate advice, overnight housebreaking and overnight sleep/whining advice... I would be ever so grateful!

Do you keep the crate in your room? He might yelp and cry less if he is in the same room with you. Don't make a fuss of him when he cries, it is reinforcing his anxiety.

I'm sorry if you already said what kind of dog he is, I'm not sure. The Jack was a small dog and had a small bladder, small dogs can't "hold it" as long as dogs that are bigger. I would take him out right before bedtime, and I mean right before you are ready to get in bed, after he goes, PRAISE PRAISE PRAISE. Take him in, as soon as you are ready to get in bed, put him in the crate with a toy, something to chew on, we would always tell Logan "Puppy go to sleep", I would lock the crate turn out the light and go to bed. The first night or two he whimpered a little bit but settled in because we ignored it.

When they are puppies, it's just like a little kid you are just potty training, if you wake up in the middle of the night, and he wakes up, you have to take him out too and make him go.

Thank you so much! He is a mixed breed... they said lab/collie but we think he is a husky/english spring spaniel mix.

My next door neighbor suggested the same thing today about taking the crate into our bedroom. If he cries, just ignore him? And should I wake him up to take him out in the middle of the night?? I am ready for all things puppy EXCEPT the over night part.

I would put his crate near you at night and ignore him, He'll go to sleep.

Do not wake him in the middle of the the night to pee. If he has to go he'll wake up and cry. Also, dont give him a wee wee pad. HE will not want to go in his crate unless he has no choice so it trains him to hold it.

When we got our puppy from NSAL he slept through the night the first night but the 2nd he woke up at 2am cause he had to go. Other than that he has held it through the night since.
