Ski/Snowboard place...and where to stay? recc some place.
-Upstate NY, etc...not too far (not like VT)
-Not for pros - more for beginners or mediocre people.
-Nice town/ambiance......only adults will be going, so a cool vibe is good.
-Place to stay - reasonable
TIA!

I honestly drive to VT its not much farther than the places people have recommended in NYS. You can be at great mountains in VT in 4 hours with great towns.
I had a ski house at Mt Snow in VT for years and love it. You also get away from the NY crowds and its more people from NE.

Re: Ski/Snowboard place...and where to stay? recc some place.
Last Year we went to Bellayre Mountain because it is really the least expensive mountain around! I believe it's actually owned by the State of NY.
It has a good range of abilities there - my husband was a beginner, my younger son is a novice and my older son is an advanced intermediate. All three had fun. Expert skiiers will find that the challenging trails aren't the MOST challenging - but if you are there to just kind of unwind and have fun, it's still fantastic.
We rented a house so we didn't really experience the 'nightlife' except for a trip downtown for dinner.. but it seemed okay. We had our own group of folks to hang out with.
If it is okay for the season this year we will likely return since it was such a good time and so cost effective.
If you really want more of a 'nightlife' and mix with other people I agree that you probably want to go to Vermont. We used to go to Killington throughout my 20's and it was always good times. Mt. Snow and Okemo (my personal fave) are a little more adult and family oriented - so it just really depends on what kind of experience you are looking for!

We go to Bellayre and Plattekill EVERY winter.
We stay at The Roxbury. Its the CUTEST place ever--I am OBSESSED with Greg the owner, if you want you can tell him I sent you. They're total NY'ers, used to be Wall Street guys, moved up north after 9/11 and bought that hotel. You can also look at VRBO or homeaway...

If you have a chance, eat at the Peekamoose, its far and away the BEST place for dinner up there.
