Sleep Position?
I know babies are definately not supposed to sleep on thier stomach, but I'm hearing conflicting opinions about whether they should sleep on thier backs or sides. I always thought it was backs, but someone told me they could choke if they spit up and so you should only place them on thier sides. I feel like I should know the answer to this question but I don't. Which is it?

Re: Sleep Position?
I used to wonder the same thing about spit up and I just read an article on this......
They said if you put a baby on their sides, they can roll over onto their stomach very easily. Having them on their back is the best way. The article said baby's will turn their head if they spit up and the spit up will run out their mouths.

Re: Sleep Position?
I asked about this in the hospital. They said put te baby on the back and when they spit up they have the reflex to turn their heads. Now that I have a 6 month old who had reflux - I did see that happen - when laying down he always turned his head to the side.

Re: Sleep Position?
Thanks ladies. That pretty much confirms what I thought. I knew I had read it in a few books. It was just someone who was a nurse who told me to put the baby on it's side, but it went against everything I had heard.
Thanks for the replies.

Back is best!!!
I was lucky because Caiden never slept on his belly until he was 10-11 months old. I was soooo worried about SIDS. I still am and he's 19.5 months old!

Re: Sleep Position?
They did tell me in the hospital to put the newborn on its side for 1 1/2 hours after feeding but when I got home I just started putting Kevin on his back.

Re: Sleep Position?
I alternate with Logan but its not because of the choking... Its because I didnt want him to get a flat head. I used the wedge to keep him in the position... One night tilted to the right, the next to the left and the next on his back. Also with choking I noticed he turns his head when he spits up.
