Sleep schedule question for newborn?

OK so i'm bf'ing DD. Last night she woke like clockwork every 3 hours to eat/burp/change etc... it took her 1 1/2 hour to get back to sleep and needless to say we are pooped. She was up quite a bit yesterday afternoon but now i'm having a hard time getting her awake during the day. She's only eaten twice today and she wont' stay awake. i'm afraid of a repeat performance. Any advice??? PLEASE. thanks. is it normal for her to sleep SO much during the day? pediatrician says to wake her to eat but she just wont wake up or she'll wake up, latch on for 3 mins etc. and snooze...

Re: Sleep schedule question for newborn?

DD slept probably 22 hours a day when she was a newborn. Perfectly normal! I do remember the nights she wouldn't go back to sleep and when she finally did I would get about a half hour of sleep and then it would be time for her to eat. It gets better! Chat Icon

I don't have any advice, I'm sorry Chat Icon But I do know how you feel. There is no waking up a sleepy newborn. Unfortunately, I've just gone with the flow of whatever DS wants to do! He makes the rules and I just follow Chat Icon And that makes for a very Chat Icon mommy sometimes!

Re: Sleep schedule question for newborn?

i agree with waking her during the day to nurse. you can try breast compressions, when she falls asleep on the breast. a lactation consultant can teach you or you can read instructions here

try to nap when she does. as hard as it is to imagine, it will get better. dd will eventually sleep longer during the night and you will have shorter bfing sessions. i promise!!!

keep up the good work!! Chat Icon
