Sleeping through the night
I am a mommy to be - and I had a question. I haven't read any info on this yet, so I hope I don't sound like a fool....
but at what point do you expect a baby to sleep through the night without feeding? And how many hours? Does it make a difference if you are bottle or breast feeding?
I am just curious because I was reading some of the CIO posts.

Re: Sleeping through the night
It depends on if they are bottle of breast fed. And all babies are different, but in general bottle fed babies sleep longer.

Yeah, there really is no way to predict when your baby will be sleeping throught the night. My DD did not sleep through the night until she was a little over 6 months old. She was BF'd and started sleeping longer when I switched to formula and after I gave her baby food. And through the night was around 9 at night until between 5-6 am.

Re: Sleeping through the night
DS was BF for only 2 weeks and has since been FM, he slept through the night, with no feedings in between prob at like 2-3 months, he has always been a great eater and sleeper though. He started pushing back the nighttime feedings on his own at that time and going to bed earlier, so now at 7 months he sleeps from 7:30PM to around 6-7 AM, with no feedings in between

Re: Sleeping through the night
DD is EBF and started sleeping 8-9 hours in a row at night at 2 months.
I was talking about this with some friends this weekend and the consensus was that reaching 13-14 lbs was the magic number more than the baby's age or what they eat.

Re: Sleeping through the night
it depends on the baby. All 3 of mine were sleeping for 8 hours stright (9pm-5am) by 2 months then they would only wake for a bottle or to nurse and be back to sleep untill 9-10 am. I only brestfed my 3rd baby and I see no difference between my bottle fed and breastfed babies. I actually think my breast fed baby sleeps better.

Re: Sleeping through the night
DS is still BF at 13 months and he started 4+ hours at 4 months and was 10-12 a night by 6-7 months. He still does 10-12 hours a night no problem...

Re: Sleeping through the night
DD has been sleeping through the night since about 2 months. She also falls asleep on her own with the mobile. I try to use only the crib when she goes down for the night and the PnP for naps. I feel so lucky, bc I don't knpow what I would do if she was up every 3 hours.

Re: Sleeping through the night
Really, really hard to say. We were told not to expect it too soon with a preemie or a smaller baby that cannot take a lot at one feeding. My DS was born with low blood sugar and our ped. mentioned that babies that have low blood sugar might sleep more and the parents think they have a good baby, but there is a problem. Then our baby did start to sleep through the night rather early. I had to be reassured that it was not because of a problem. My baby is fine and now I am lucky to have a good sleeper. But this did give me a new perspective that sleeping through the night is not always ideal. As far as CIO, that is an issue that actually comes up later. Very few people believe in doing that with a newborn and it's not really necessary then. It is more necessary when the babies become more aware of wanting things like story time, etc.

Re: Sleeping through the night
Thanks for your responses. I have heard parents say that their DC sleeps through the night - but I didn't know what that was considered by most people. I figured 6-8 hours but then I heard someone say that their 6 month old slept for 12 hours and I didn't even know that was possible! I have a lot to learn!
I know all babies are different, so I wanted to hear different answers from all moms. Thanks again!

Re: Sleeping through the night
My daughter didn't sleep through the night until she was two years old. There was a stretch from about 6-12 weeks where she slept through most nights. After that, it only happened on occasion until after her seond birthday.

Re: Sleeping through the night
DD is EBF and she started sleeping through the night at 5/6 months...straight through 12 hours She just started doing it one night and never stopped, so I have no advice other than they do what they want to do!

Re: Sleeping through the night
DS was formula fed from 6 weeks on and started sleeping through the night (10 hrs) at 8 weeks. DD is EBF and is almost 7 months and this week just started sleeping 10-11hrs. My nephew who was formula fed was waking up until he was 14 months so it is hard to tell.

Re: Sleeping through the night
DS was sleeping 10+ hours at 1 month old. He was a REALLY good sleeper!
DD slept 10-12 hours the night she got her 2 month shots and has every night after. before this she was sleeping 6-8 hours at about 6 weeks. before 6 weeks was every 3-4 hours.
But... every baby is def different.

Re: Sleeping through the night
DS slept through the night for the first time at 2 weeks. We woke up in the morning and we went running to him thinking something was wrong. (Well, that didn't last, but it was a glorious night!)
He really started sleeping better when we moved him to his own room, in the crib at 7 weeks. At that point he was only waking once per night. I don't remember when he officially started sleeping through the night, but I know it was between 2-3 months.
I exclusively breastfeed. So, it's not just formula babies. We are very blessed with him!

Re: Sleeping through the night
DD started sleeping through the night at 6 weeks (the same night we moved her to her own room). She is EBF, but I pump - so she gets a little more in her last bottle to keep her full.
