Slow cooker beef stew recipe?
Does anyone have an easy one ?
or can you answer a question --- I looked up beef stew recipes on foodnetwork.com and came up with a pretty easy one but it said I needed to brown the stew meat on the stove top first---do you really have to do this? I thought the whole point of the slow cooker was to throw everything in at once and slowly cook over time so that it is easy and simple and ready when you get home from work??? Would it not taste good if I didn't brown the meat first?

Re: Slow cooker beef stew recipe?
My mom never browns the meat first. It's one of my favorites- so no, I don't think it loses anything.
Then again, I've never had it with the meat browned...

You don't have to, but I usually flour and brown meat before putting it in the slow cooker. It seals in the juices and I find it tastes better. I think it's a matter of preference.

ditto. I have done it both ways...I don't have a slow cooker though. If i was doing the slow cooker, I wouldn't want to get another pot dirty

Re: Slow cooker beef stew recipe?
If you dredge the meat in seasonsed flour, brown it in a pan and deglaze the pan with some stock or cooking liquid it not only thickens your stew, but you get all the lovely nice brown bits in your stew. Not necessary, but imo worth it!!!

Re: Slow cooker beef stew recipe?
I am making this right now in the slow cooker. 1 big package of beef cubes 1 small can salt free tomato sauce 1/2 bag of frozen chopped onions frozen carrot ( I use crinkle cut) frozen string beans 4 cans of beef gravy- I used the waldbaums brand some water powder garlic, black pepper, onion powder *** you can add frozen mixed veggies whatever you like, DH is a picky eater so this is what we use*** Place all of the ingredients in the slow cooker , sprinkle w/ garlic powder, black pepper, and onion powder. Add some water, Cook on low all day- serve over noodles. Or you can add potatoes cubed when you put the stuff in originally. You might need to adjust spices according to taste. Enjoy!!!

That was my thing. I got the slow cooker to make food in ONE pot. I didnt want to dirty another pan at all either!!!!
