SLR camera - Is it worth it if I'm not taking a class?
I currently use a point and shoot and while it's very practical, I feel like I am missing out on some "photographer quality" shots by not using an SLR. However, I have no time to take any classes so I'm probably only going to be using the most basic functions. Does it pay to invest in such an expensive camera if I'm not taking advantage of all of its features?

IMO, it still pays. And who knows, maybe down the road you can take a class. Also there are great books and great info on the web.

I have an SLR, and I haven't taken any official classes. My cousin is a professional photographer in TX, and she gave me a few quick pointers...the rest I've played with on my own, or read/researched online when I've had time.
So, IMO, yes, it's worth it...the quality of the pictures can't be beat!! Of course now, if I have to use my point and shoot, I HATE it!!! LOL Guess I'm spoiled!!

absolutely!! pictures are soooo much better with the SLR. but I do keep a point and shoot handy for when I do not want to lug around the camera bag (which isn't often).

I think so. I got a SLR for christmas and havent taken a class. Besides figuring it out on my own, there are some good free tutorials online depending on which camera you get.

Same here! Also someone posted free online classes. I have to find the link. I have found the trial and error way is the best for me to learn anyway.
And the pictures are awesome. ONLY regret is that I waited long to get it,

I did not take a class until I had my camera for 2 years already. I did not buy in the intent to even take a class to learn. But at some point, I had an interest in getting out of the auto mode and I took a class.
