SLR mommies one question...

I'm buying one asap but I have one question. If you had a choice which would you choose:

Nikon D40 with the kit lens and the 55-200, nikon bag, 4GB memory card, and card reader OR

The Canon Rebel XS with just the kit (no extra lens), filter, and 4GB memory card.

Both are new in box (Nikon is USA). I will order a filter with the Nikon if I chose that. They are about the same price.

Anyone have feedback from Cameta if I ordered it online (it's an ebay auction / buy it now offer.)

Re: SLR mommies one question...

I have the cannon xsi, the 12.2 megapixel one, and I loove it...I still have no clue how to use it beyond the auto functions thoughChat Icon ..but I've never used a Nikon so can't really give you an honest comparison...
I have the 18-55 lens for the nikon and then got a bigger lens added on to the packaged I bought....I believe its the 55-250 lens, and its AMAZING...

Thanks Pickles! I'm confused though - you said you don't have a Nikon but use the Nikon lens?

Re: SLR mommies one question...

I LOOOOVE my Nikon. I had 2 canon powershots before this (they were P & S). It is very user friendly and I'm researching zoom lenses. My kids SEE the camera, and it's click "let us see, let us see". I can't get anything but cheesy, squinty smiles.

The D40 is only a 6mp, but MP alone does NOT make a great shot. It's quality, lighting, etc.

I've only experimented with the settings so I'm hardly a seasoned shooter.

great site...but he does lean towards Nikon

Re: SLR mommies one question...

I have absolutely no experience with Cannons, I know a bunch of ladies love them.

That said-- I have the d40 and the 55-200 lens. I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE that lens...so I definitely vote for the Nikon package with that lens-- make sure the 55-200 lens is a 55-200 VR lens...the VR is important, it helps stabilize the camera which is important for closeups. It's around $50 or so more for the VR lens instead of the lens without it, but totally worth it!

C thanks so much for pointing out the VR lens. It's NOT!! It's Nikon 55-200mm AF-S DX Zoom Lens. I guess I'm back to searching again.

No problem! I know Barb and others on here say the same about really going for the VR when possible. Like I said, it was about a $50 difference when I got my camera.

Have you checked out ritzcamera.com? That's who I got my camera through (it was a gift), and they have a store in Carle Place that's AWESOME to work with, that's where I exchanged my non-VR lens for the VR one and paid the difference...got my warranty through the store too, and took my damaged camera there and they took care of the repairs too.

Check out their website!

This one has the VR lens I believe, but only comes with the bag, DVD and the lenses, no other extras (I think this was the exact package I got, except I had to upgrade to the VR). Not sure how much you saw the other package for at the other website, but check it out:
