small bathroom ... window question
i have some bathroom questions...
in our new house (scheduled to close around the holidays) there is only one bath and the bath is small (5x8)
the window is in the shower and needs to go the bath tile is orig. with the house (1930s) and the sink, etc... is bulky yucky 70s, so one of the first things on our list is to redo the bath ASAP
was thinking of possibly closing up the window in the shower and moving it to the other wall...has anyone ever see a bathroom with a window over the sink?

Re: small bathroom ... window question
I have never seen a window over a sink - only mirrors. I have seen tons of windows in the shower though.
Instead of moving the window, can you just remove it completely? Lots of bathrooms do not have windows. This may give you more freedom in your design plans.

Re: small bathroom ... window question
You can just change the design of the window in the shower. DH did this in the bathroom of our old house. Instead of a small traditional vertical it was a long thin, horizontal... oh, can't think of the name .... the one with the crank . It was placed higher on the wall so there was no need for privacy glass... it started right about where the top of my head is, I'm 5'8" so probably almost 6 feet up the wall.
It's better to have the widow closest to the tub/shower for mildew/ventitation purposes.
I'll see if I can find a picture.
ETA: I grew up in a house with three bathrooms and none had windows. Never again... I would not recommend taking the window out. Mold and mildew grow a lot faster in a non-windowed bathroom and they are harder to ventilate.
I don't have a before but here's the after. Image Attachment(s):

Re: small bathroom ... window question
I have the same thing - it's an awning window. Mine has the privacy glass though and it's about two feet high by three feet wide. It's great for ventilation.

Re: small bathroom ... window question
Check the building codes. I'm pretty sure a bathroom needs a window or a vent to the outside. When we had our bathroom redone, I had them put a vent through the roof, even though we had a window. I am not keeping the window open when it's 20 below zero and snowing just to vent the steam from my shower!

If you are totally redoing the bathroom, can you move the window, but also move the sink and or tub? Can you come up with a new layout?

Re: small bathroom ... window question
Why dont you close all windows and put in a skylight? Windows in tub just give more problems with water damage anyway wait till you open up that wall where the window is you'll probably see what I am talking about....

We no longer live in the house. We sold last year. I would guess it was longer than most basement windows from what I can remember.
As for a a window having to be in a bathroom, a bathroom does not have to have a window. You need a very good ventilation fan. Having lived in a house with three bathrooms with no windows I still would no recommend it, the mildew builds up faster
A skylight is an option but if it's a southern exposure just know that it's going to get very hot in that bathroom during the summer.

I have but I find that layout awkward. Where would you put the mirror/medicine cabinet?
Ideally a window would be outside the shower - it's good for ventilation and it's nice to have natural light in the bathroom. We gutted our bathroom and decided to keep the window where it was - in the shower. It's rather large, actually, and I love it in the summer. We also have an excellent ventilation system with one vent in the corner of the shower - out of the way of water - and one over the toilet

Re: small bathroom ... window question
I saw a window above a sink on some design show and they had a double sided mirror medicine cabinet that swung open from the side wall, so when opened you could use the mirror that way

Re: small bathroom ... window question
The window in our bathroom is over the toilet. It has privacy glass and I have a vinyl blind on that window that I keep pulled down all the time. Is that a possibility in your layout?

i know that the window is nasty...it had a sweet kinda' swelling going on when we looked at it...i can only imagine what else we'll find...
to do a sky light we'd need to case through the attic, but thats a thought!

Re: small bathroom ... window question
if you are putting a window above the sink use a round or oval. The round can go up higher. Make sure it is operational for ventilation.
