small dilemma... cell phone related

i'm looking to save money, but i also want the best for my buck.

DS and i each have an iphone 4 with Verizon. SO has htc one v with virgin mobile.

verizon ain't cheap and iphones ain't cheap.
virgin mobile has pretty inexpensive plans that i hear wonderful things about.

black friday 2012 virgin mobile had an amazing sale where the htc one v was only $49 each and we bought two (for DS and me).

the thing is that SO is ALWAYS complaining about his phone sucking... being too slow, missing messages, not getting signal.

i've had a conversation with DS and he says he doesn't NEED an iphone or ANY smartphone. he's cool with getting a DUMB phone.

so, my question to you... got any ideas/suggestions on this matter?
it's only a phone, but i'm a bit confused.

I say get what's in the budget if it doesn't matter to you. Right now my old job pays for my IPhone. Cases have stopped coming lately so I wonder if they are trying to tell me something and soon I will be in the same predicament as you. I already have an IPad so will probably end up with the most basic plan ever and not a smart phone.

i guess i'll start with checking out verizon and see what non-smart phone plans they offer.

i just am very turned off by the virgin mobile because SO has soooo many problems with it. then again, he's known for breaking everything.

We switched to Verizon after having ATT because we were sooooo frustrated with ATT's sevice (for phone calls - constantly dropping calls, many missed calls etc. - on plain old regular phones, not smart phones) Even though Verizon is more expensive, we have found that the service is so much better. So, if having a reliable PHONE is important to you, I'd be careful about switching to a service that you know is not reliable.

Before we switched to iPhones in 2011, we had the following non-smart phone, which was free with a 2-year contract.

Samsung Intensity. Not sure if it's still available, but I know my BIL and SIL have this phone still (or its replacement) and they have no complaints.

As a word of caution, since I know you are planning a road trip out west....make sure to have a national carrier when on that trip because there are many areas with weak or no reception. We have Verizon and had some issues while on vacation in WY and MT last summer - we always had a signal, but it wasn't always very strong.

Just FYI, non smart phones are almost not available anymore. And usually they cost more money then people should ever pay for them

You may want to keep your iPhone and just drop to the lowest package they allow. I don't know how much you travel or whatnot but I use my smartphone for everything. Its my GPS, my mobile banking, my main line and so on and so on.

I find the verizon store pretty useless for basic phones. They see what I'm interested in and don't even bother coming over to help me. We always end up at best buy and they're very helpful and don't push big plans on us. We have basic phones, the smallest number of minutes offered, no data fee, and small text packages. I do go over texts some months but it's usually a few dollars extra. We are thinking of upgrading soon but I rarely regret no having a smart phone.

Are you still under contract with Verizon? That would be my determining factor.

If you are, you stay with them until the end of the contract.

If you aren't, I'd keep what you have until you get where you are going & then talk to people out there to see what the best carrier is.

As for SO, his plan & phone wouldn't be my concern.

we're no longer under contract with verizon.

SO's phone and plan are separate from ours. i only included that as a reference. we have those phones, but i'm very hesitant to switch over because i see him with all his problems. i've toyed with selling the phones via craigslist.

Find out who the better carrier is in Cali, and go from there. It's only a few months until you get there .......
Keep the Verizon until you get to Cali - they seem to have better coverage across the US.

I've been to Oregon and various places in Cali (including farms) and haven't run into problems with the Verizon service.
I don't have the iPhone, I have a Samsung Galaxy, DH has a Droid.
