Small dinner party help
Just inviting another couple and their little girl.
I wanted to BBQ but not the regular stuff.
I was thinking about maybe some shish ka bobs, cold salads (homemade), fruit, a light or gooey cake?
Sangria?
These are not things I would normally make for a BBQ so I need some help.
TIA!

Re: Small dinner party help
I'd marinate shrimp in minced garlic, olive oil and lime juice, then skewer it for the grill. Make some grilled veggies too. Do some plain BBQ cutlets for the little.
For salads - maybe a Burmese Potato Salad, a macaroni salad and a tomato, mint and onion salad.
I'd do a white sangria as a nod to the fading summer. I use a Muscato wine (it's pretty sweet), a little peach or apple liquor and a lot of fruit. I also like to add seltzer becasue I like the fizz...
For dessert I'd do a rum cake for you and the other couple - and some cupcakes or ice cream cups for the little one. OR a trifle is always delicious!
I'm hungry.

So nice. Thanks for the help.

Also a regular mac salad or something different?
I agree with white sangria.

Re: Small dinner party help
what Jeannie wrote sounds delish.
but taking it another direction, you could do
marinated flank steak
marinade 2 1 1/3-pound flank steaks 1 tablespoon dried oregano 2 teaspoons ground cumin Coarse kosher salt 1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil 11/4 cups thinly sliced green onions (about 6) 1 12-ounce bottle dark beer 1/2 cup Worcestershire sauce
marinade steak over night. grill to desired doneness.
guacamole 3 RIPE HAAS avocados kosher salt finely minced garlic (about 3 or so cloves) finely minced onion (I guess about 1/2 a small onion) finely minced jalapeno finely minced fresh cilantro juice of one lime
mash avos...add salt and half the amounts of the chopped veggies and the lime juice. stir up and taste. add rest of ingredients as your taste buds dictate.
grilled sweet plaintains
2 or 3 VERY ripe maduros (sweet plaintains) olive oil
slice the bananas on an angle, about 1/3 to 1/2 inch think. toss with olive oil. grill until soft and charr marks begin to form.
corn and black bean salad
sweet corn kernals (however you get them..canned, frozen, fresh-cook first) 15 oz can of black beans, rinsed finely chopped RED onion (about 1/2) chopped fresh cilantro salt pepper fresh lime juice olive oil
combine corn, beans, cilantro and onion in a bowl. slowly add seasonings and liquid until it tastes good (I obviously need to write my own cookbook)
Jicama and radish salad
Mexican chocolate pudding
summer peach frozen margaritas (per drink)
1 1/2 oz resposado tequila 1/2 oz citronge/triple sec/cointreau splash (or 2) of peach schnapps ice cubes scoop of peach sorbet diced fresh peeled peaches (and some sliced for garnish)
combine first 5 ingredients with peach DICES in a blender and give it a whirl. taste for yumminess and adjust accordingly. pour into glass and garnish with peach slices.
for the child, peach sorbet with ice cubes and a Goya peach nectar make a fab virgin alternative.

Re: Small dinner party help
Jess, that sounds great. It's more in line with what I make than Jeannie's but I love both sides of it.
Oh now what to make?
I do make a mean guac and I love the mex flair. Love plantanos! sour cream and mole sauce to boot.
Flank steak is a great idea but never used a marinade like that. Maybe I could make the shrimp and the steak.
thanks to both of you.

Re: Small dinner party help
Tomato salad-so easy and so refreshing.
Slice tomatoes (as many as you need to make a big enough salad) I usually use several types of tomatoes to make it look like a mixture of them. Add 3 or 4 large fresh basil leaves-tear up as small as you can. Dice 1 large package of Polly-O Mozzarella cheese -or you can use fresh Mozzarella if you'd like. 1 Red onion cut in quarters, then sliced into thin slivers. Make 1 packet of the Good Seasons Italian seasoning mix with RED vinegar.
Mix together and serve.

it has to be basil. I don't think you can eat bay leaves. I think they are just used for flavor and removed from recipes..at least all of those that i have seen.
ETA: A number of members of the Laurel family (including mountain laurel and cherry laurel) have leaves that are poisonous to humans and livestock. While these plants are not sold anywhere for culinary use, their visual similarity to bay leaves has led to the oft-repeated belief that bay leaves should be removed from food after cooking because they are poisonous. This is not true - bay leaves may be eaten without toxic effect. However, they remain very stiff even after thorough cooking, and if swallowed whole or in large pieces, they may pose a risk of scratching the digestive tract or even causing choking. Thus most recipes that use bay leaves will recommend their removal after the cooking process has finished.
so, it won't kill you. but not the best to chew on.

Re: Small dinner party help
This is an awesome dessert for a summer BBQ. And kids will love- b/c they can pull it apart. It is the perfect gooey cake you requested. : ) A made this for a friends Bridal Shower which was an outside BBQ- they devoured it in 30 mins.
Monkey Bread
Here are two recipes the first is more simple. I leave out the raisins and walnuts
http://www.pillsbury.com/Recipes/ShowRecipe.aspx?rid=12327
This second was is great with frosting.

Alyssa likes steak, chicken,( she is not big on chicken nuggets unless there is no breading.....) pasta, chocolate, loves marshmellows, chips, snacks..... One year my Uncle put a whitefish head on her plate during Yom Kippur , it was pretty funny, she did not find it funny we all did..... I just reminded her of it the other day.LOL For pasta salad- I boil up rotelle pasta, rinse and add defrosted dry frozen veggies and then add Italian dressing, or cheese tortellini cooked and drained and add brushetta and mix. HTH Any other questions, feel free to ask away... Go for the fishes! She would have freaked we were just on a cruise and there was a stop in Maine and it was a lobster bake- and the poor lobsters were sitting there all steamed , I was a little freaked out and I eat fish!
