What defines them?

Initially.. Rob and I were supposed to have a quiet, romantic supper alone tonight.. but this and that happened and it became impossible. So we invited a few of our favorite couples over for 'game night' - just dinner, wine and a few rounds of Pictionary or Cranium. I keep saying it's a small gathering - because we have only invited a few couples that we are especially close with - not even all of the regulars. But Rob insists it's a 'party' because when all is said and done there will be 12 adults (including Rob and I) plus about 9 kids.

So do you define a party by the number of guests (and if so what # defines gathering vs. party)? Or do you define it in some other way - the reason for the get together, the people you invite, etc..?
