Small vent- but sometimes I just have to wonder about doctors
so my endo (my diabetis doc) told me I need to learn "advance carb counting"
and said I need to see their nutrionist
turns out- she doesn't take my insurace- so I had to cancel
I decided to google- advance carb counting just to see what I should be doing
and I have been doing that since I stopped listening to their doses of insulin recommendations
the had me on 6 units for each meal- which is roughly 90 carbs per meal- which is insane- my sugar was constantly going scary low
Now I take about 6 to 8 units a day- which I figure out at each meal what I need based on what I am eating- or advance carb counting- did he really think I needed to wait a year to learn this?
1 unit for 15 grams of carbs- it's not rocket science (that's what my body requires)
I read 1 book (think like a Panceras) and learned more then these "experts" have ever taught me- it's so frustrating b/c I feel like my doctors just want to keep having me take insulin that I do not need....which I know can apply to many doctors- more meds = more $$$$$$$$
I think I need to find a new doctor

yes, doctors make me crazy most of the time! find a new one, preferably one that someone else recommends.

Re: Small vent- but sometimes I just have to wonder about doctors
In my experience, I've learned so much more helpful health information off the internet than I have from any doctor I've seen. It's really annoying! I've found most doctors to not be very knowledgeable at all.

This bothers me, as well. I see it a lot with many of the clients my agency works with. I also think it's disgusting how many of them prescribe painkillers, especially for a first visit w/o really knowing the client's history.
A lot of doctors will also just re-write scripts based on what someone else wrote years ago, because they are nervous to change anything, even if a request or tweeking is made by someone who has their wits about them.
In the past, when I was pregnant with my son, my former Ob-gyn flipped her $hit because I didn't want to attend lamaze at LIJ but chose to go to an LIF vendor "she never heard of". I felt like she was getting some kind of kick-back from the hospital.

2nd and 3rd opinions don't hurt! Can you find another dietician that takes your insurance?

Re: Small vent- but sometimes I just have to wonder about doctors
To be honest, if you have not seen a nutritionist at all since you were diagnosed, I would see one and if you have, you may have more specific questions now. As the wife of a diabetic I will tell you that the best training my husband ever had was from the nutritionsit employed by the insulin pump company. This was after DH had been diabetic for many years and knew a lot. I'm saying this and a I hate big pharma. Some nutritionists are certified diabetes educators. There is always something new to learn. However, I see no reason to have to go outside your plan. If you do not like your doctor, by all means, change. At this point, my husband has a lot of the day to day things in check and they set goals for his 3 month blood sugar average. He's never had poor control. Unfortunately I have had clients who do have poor control and I have seen too much. Take the time to see someone but maybe you want to pick the person yourself.

I have gone to a nutrionist- It was one of the first things I did
it was very helpful- there was a 6 month wait to see the one at my doctors office- so I went else where and actually paid out of pocket
I got the names of 3 in my plan- in case I do want to see someone again
I do lots of my own reserach- I prefer to do that as well
