SNL Skit about Gov. Paterson
i have to find the link...
some say it was in poor taste, and lends to the perception that people with disabilities are incapable or at a disadvantage - others say it's humor, and to lighten up
discuss
eta: LINK

Re: SNL Skit about Gov. Patterson
Well I totally PIMP during some of it. I did feel bad and somewhat wrong but I lol anyway
I called it my "Going straight to Hell" moment. ETA" actually what really had me crying was when he kept walking in front of the camera so Amy Pohler couldn't see the prompter. That was carried over from the spoof of the debates. I love that subtle kind of humor.

Re: SNL Skit about Gov. Paterson
i won't lie---i was watching it on sat. and was laughing hysterically at it...even though i know i shouldn't be.
honestly, its SNL--they aren't exactly the most politically correct show and it was a silly sketch and that's all I saw it as.
ETA: Amy's Goodbye
at 25 seconds you can see the part where Amy is trying to say goodbye and Patterson keeps getting in the shot. lol

Re: SNL Skit about Gov. Paterson
SNL has been making fun of everyone since its inception. They are equal opportunity comedians. No one is safe.
I was practically in tears over the "Really?" part where they mocked Blagojevich's hair.
It doesn't make Patterson seem inept as a governor- it made it out like he can't see very well...and well, he can't, can he? Also it's not like he's going to see the skit or anything, right?
I thought it was hysterical but have been known for having a black sense of humor

Re: SNL Skit about Gov. Paterson
I thought it was funny too.
They were mostly focusing in the beginning at least on his complete ineptitude and dumb luck in becoming governer.
Drug charges, infidelity and in any other place he would be a bad bad person, but compared to the last one, he's a saint.
Shouldn't get a free pass BECAUSE he's blind.

Re: SNL Skit about Gov. Paterson
Hmmmm...I don't know. Gov. Patterson himself was not thrilled with the skit and evidently, he's known to have a good sense of humor. His point is that only 35% percent of disabled individuals are employed and perhaps portrayals of this kind are to blame in part.
Just because he's blind does not make him a bumbling fool.
I was not offended (then again, hardly anything offends me), but didn't think it was terrifically funny either. And after reading the governor's response, I side with him.

See now i think the beginning was definitely poking fun at him being blind--but honestly I see the skit more as showing how Gov. Patterson has his own skeletons in his closet....his own scandals...yet because of Gov. Spitzer's actions, he became governor of NY. Like if he had actually run for Gov. he probably would never have won....but here he is as the leader of the state.

Lighten up, people. It's not like Paterson saw it...
KIDDING! KIDDING!
Honestly, SNL makes fun of everyone for a variety of reasons and is I don't think Paterson should necessarily be exempt....
I just watched the whole skit and while there were off color moments, I don't find it offensive (and FWIW, I spent many, many years of my life working with the disabled)... I can see how some people might get upset by it, but... honestly, in general, though, I think people just need a better sense of humor.
And I wouldn't EXPECT Paterson to be thrilled with it any more than I would expect other people they make fun of to be thrilled with it.

I think it pretty much put forth what all of us were thinking about Patterson. Especially the bits about NJ. I jest. I jest.

Come to think of it... DH works with the deaf and they are the ones at the bar on Fridays telling all the Helen Keller jokes. They don't hold back.

It would be completely different if he was involved. If the governor was on the show and in on the joke, it would have been funny.
Personally I think SNL hasn't been funny in so long, and this skit is just another example of how they suck.
