So after all the years of blaming the dryer...
It turns out it was the washing machine that was eating the socks.
I just had a Sears repair man here to fix my washer that was acting funny. He takes stuff out of the filter and in there was one of Jeremys socks. Chewed to shreds. How it got in the filter I will never know but the dryer is now the innocent party

There was another clump of stuff that looked like chewed up socks so perhaps they were there too
