So apparently this dark roots trend has a name!
Just browsing my latest Ulta mailing and they have a section on highlight specials at the salon...
"Balayage Technique" Sun-kissed, natural, low maintenance Darker roots transition to lighter ends for a sizzling summer look!
Or I can save the money and let my roots grow out 5 inches and BAM! I now have a "sizzling summer look!"
Not sure why anyone would pay to get their har to look like mine does when I am WAY over due for a highlight!
But I do agree with the low maintenance part! That's for sure!

Seriously. This fancy name they gave it is just a way to be able to use less hair dye and still charge you more for the session.

I'm not a hairdresser - so if I'm wrong, someone please correct me, but I thought Balayage is just a specific way of painting on highlights (instead of foiling). I think they are misusing the term.

I believe this is correct.
I would try ombre actually, I think it looks good on black hair, esp since my highlights look best once they're grown out

That is a current trend? It always reminds me of Sarah Jessica Parker in the Sex and the City days.

I think so too, i"ve heard it called Ombre hair using these technique.
I've had it done, but my stylist did it so that the highlights where coming from underneath, and I had choppy layers on top, it was very subtle, unless I put my hair up. I loved it.
I think the key is that it shouldn't see the line where the highlights start its should blend in.
Its very easy to get it wrong, but when its right, its gorgeous.
