SO DONE! Please help

I am so done with trying to find an Elementary Teaching job on LI!!!!
Can anyone tell me about the process of finding an El. teaching job in NYC?
OR
Does anyone know of any openings as an El. Teacher, EL. Leave Replacement or TA?
I am NY State certified, over 5 years experience, and I hold a Master's Degree in Childhood Education 1-6.
Thanks to anyone that can help me out!

Re: SO DONE! Please help

Start targeting neighborhoods and walk in resumes. I know that we have hired a few people over the years that have walked in resumes. Call some of the Queens/Brooklyn colleges and ask about job fairs. When I when to St. John's University there were always NYC schools represented at their job fairs. You can also call regional offices to find out about vacancies. NYC pays subs pretty well but with no health benefits. You can sub and that may lead to something too. Have you gotten evaluated by the NYC DOE and been cleared to teach yet?

When I started in 2001 you had to go in person down to Court St., but I think the process is online now:

Apply to teach in NYC

Once you're cleared to teach, you can start applying. They TELL you that you apply for jobs online, posting a resume and credentials on the online system, and that interested principals will contact you. But that's not how most people get hired. You have to go to the schools you're interested in and drop off your resume, talk to people. Or at least mail one in. Your application does have to be online when they hire you because principals have to go through the system to officially add you to their staff, but they rarely find candidates in this way. Or at least they didn't with anyone I knew. And I knew a LOT of people applying for new jobs when I taught HS in Brooklyn.

You never know when someone is going to go on medical leave, move to another city, have a family emergency and have to quit... there will be jobs out there in NYC. Actually, now might not be a bad time to apply because of the high turnover rate - so many recent grads get jobs and just can't handle it and never come back. It happened all the time at the high school I worked at.

Good luck! Chat Icon

You do not even need to go to Court Street. You can go into the district you want to work in, and use their office!!!!!

I'm not much help, admittedly...I got fed up too--came to NC, picked the school I wanted to work in, told them what grade I wanted, and I had a job, just like that...

They are amazed at what the job market is like in NY.

With the board of ed. you really need to take the initiative. they tell you to complete this application, but just because you did, doesn't mean they contact for an interview. some principals do, but not all. i would take a look at schools in the city that you would be interested and personally mail, call or WALK into the school with your resume. principals in NYC can hire without consulting court street. counrt street can place you, but they will stick you in a spot that they must fill, not necessarily one you want, so i would do my own research first and see if you can get hired on your own. GOOD LUCK!
