So down this week....

I have Christopher's parent teacher conference today, and his annual review next week at my school district.
I read his reports, and I know we still have a lot of work to do with him, but he has made so much progress in our eyes, but it is so devastating to read a report stating that your child will need a 1:1 aide next year. Do I think he needs one...YES, but just reading it made me cryChat Icon ok, vent over.
Thanks for reading

Re: So down this week....

Reading any of the reports is upsetting to me, because I never think he is as delayed as it shows in the evaluation.

I try to think about all the progress he has made and how loving and affectionate he is and that cheers me up. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: So down this week....

Chat Icon through the eyes of a Special Ed teacher (with the heart of a mommy), the reports are written with all the best intentions for your children. so that they always get the services and support that will help them grow and progress.

I had to write a few reports myself, and was actually told that I needed to portray the child more accurately, which was true. As I wrote it, I was also reading it through the eyes of a mom, and I was so cautious with my words and with how I wrote it, that I was focusing so much on the little bits of progress (which are HUGE milestones for this one child !) Chat Icon Chat Icon (and not enough on the delays, that anyone that doesnt know the student, just from reading the report (esp those that will authorize further services for the student) might not truly understand how much this child needs and will benefit from services.

As a teacher, I can tell you, that our heart is in it more than you can imagine. I love being in this field, and I wish I would have started this many years ago.

Each of your children is special, amazing and has so much potential. We (teachers) are your teammates and your child's biggest cheerleaders.

Hugs to you, Diane Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

16 years later and I still hate it....

I live it...

I breath it...

But to see it on paper breaks my heart...

I don't too often but I know exactly how it feels. There's something about seeing it in black and white. Every time I read a report/evaluation, I feel like someone hit me in the stomach.
Many hugs to you!

Reading those reports is the hardest things EVER.

Ry recently had his evaluations and I had my meeting with all his teachers. I came home and read the evaluation findings and I cried. It is so hard to see it in print about everything that he can't do and what level he is functioning on. Even though the meeting went well and they all agree he is doing very well, the words on paper are HARD.

Hang in there. Chat Icon

Re: So down this week....

I know Chat Icon BUT in the reports they never want to make the kids look like they are doing TOO well because they don't want the child to lose anything in terms of services. It NEVER is a true measure of who they are, their potential, or what they truly are capable of doing Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Anna is 100% right, which I'm sure you know if you've been through a couple of them, or even one. And I know the language needs to be very succinct so as to benefit your child. But it still brings tears to your eyes. Never read stuff when they are sleeping bc then you want to go hug them and you see them sleeping like the perfect little angels that they are and it makes the crying worse. Chat Icon

ETA: The first time I ever read a report was when my son was getting evaluated through CPSE and his preschool teacher had to write her feedback. I was blindsided bc I wasn't expecting it - what she wrote made him sound like a sociopath. I remember sitting at my kitchen island crying inconsolaby for over an hour.
