So explain this girl/boy thing to me?
So I read that your are more likely to have a girl if you BD before you ovulate because girls are slower swimmers and live longer than the boy sperm.
So, is this really true? And, if it is, what exactly does that mean? If the CBFM gives me a peak reading on Day 15 and Day 16 when should I BD if I want a girl.
This TTC crap is exhausting!

Sounds like an old wives tale to me.

Supposedly if you want a girl you should BD before your peak day but not on the peak day. To be honest I will take whatever I can get so I don't pay too much attention to this anymore.

For a girl I think you are supposed to bd 24 to 48 hours before O. So I guess the day before and the of the Positive OPK but not the next day.

Re: So explain this girl/boy thing to me?
I learned this in bio in college.
XX Sperm swim slower and live longer
XY Sperm swim faster and die sooner
You can try to use this method, but it doesn't change your 50/50 odds too much. I told my sister to do this after she had 2 boys... she had 2 more boys after them, lol... she's PG now with #5, so we'll see if it worked this time!
So this is partially true, but partially an old wive's tale, if that makes any sense.

Get that book by Shuttles...I think that is his name. He did a lot of studies on it. The book was interesting.

I thought trying to get preggo is exhausting but trying to conceive a gender on certain days is really too much for me. I will be happy with just getting preggo.

Re: So explain this girl/boy thing to me?
It is called the Shettles Method, and I don't think it is a guarantee, although it worked for me.
For a boy you only want to BD the day of or the day after ovulation.
For a girl you want to BD the couple of days leading up to ovulation.

Hi Girls, there is also something called the Chinese Conception Chart. You can google it. It goes by the age of the mom when the baby is concieved and the month the baby is concieved in. It will tell you if it is a boy or a girl. Many say it doesn't work, but it worked for some friends of mine.

I am not comfortable with the idea of picking the sex, so I have to agree here.

Call me traditional, but I think its all a 50/50 c r a p shoot. The methods "work" when you get what you hoped for. I don't think anything is fool proof.

ITA.
i am so curious about the people who try this method... is it really that important to them to have one over the other?

Obviously, I will be thrilled with either a boy or girl. But I read in the FAM book about it and I was curious. I would never judge a person one way or the other! I don't think it means much if someone has a preference. Due to my job, I am very familiar with birth defects and part of my reason has to do with that.

FWIW, I don't believe the Shettles method works, nor do most ways of trying to "choose" the gender of your baby.
But I will say there's nothing wrong with someone *wanting* one gender or the other. I have two boys and my next will probably be my last baby. I don't think it's wrong that I'd like to have a daughter to experience that side of things.
I'll be happy if I have a boy too, if I am lucky enough to get pregnant again. You can want something but still be happy if you get something else.

I guess you could say I "tried" this method and it "worked" for me. Though it didn't matter what gender we had, I had just read about this in TTOYF and wanted to experiment. We BDed within the timeframe of my cycle that would supposedly make a girl more likely and ended up having a girl. Who really knows-it was early in our whole "let's make a baby" mission and it was fun to try it out.

It wasn't *important* for us when trying for #2. But I was thinking at the time I only wanted 2, and since I already had a girl, I figured we would try for a boy. Not like I would have been upset either way, I just wanted to give it a shot.

Same with us. Now that we're having issues with TTC #2 our plans to try for the boy have kind have gone out the window.

I'm curious...so you tried the shettles method for a boy with your second child? I see you have a girl and a boy. TIA
The shettles method believes if you bd on ovulation day you are more likley to conceive a boy.
