So frustrated/worried about my baby... (long)

So i had to take Jacob to the ped today for diarrhea. Last week he had it (the day of the GTG) and i called my ped. I told him he didnt have a fever and didnt seem to be in any pain, so he just said to watch him. Well it didnt let up, going like 6 times a day as of friday and going in the middle of the night which is so unlike him. And then he got the worst diaper rash on his little heiny, it was so red and irritated. So i brought him in today and of course my regular ped wasnt in so i had to see the moron associate. She gave me those cards to wipe his poo on and i have to bring it back in on wednesday. They are gonna test for blood in his stool. but i kinda figured out that my best friend had a bad stomach virus last week and she was around Jacob so i believe thats where he got it from. But my main concern is the fact that he cannot handle eating any foods. Someone suggested celiac disease but that would mean he was allergic to gluten and then he WOULD have been able to handle rice cereal cause rice has no gluten in it. And he cant handle rice either.

So now she referred me to another GI doctor for further tests. Also his weight is not where it should be, she said it is on the low side. He did gain from last month but just a few oz.

He is drinking his formula with minimal spit up, and i give him like 6 1/2 -7 oz each feeding but he doesnt always drink it all. I guess i should be writing down how much he is drinking at each feeding. I guess all the pooping is where the formula is going. I am just praying that there is nothing wrong with him or his intestines. But what could be causing such problems with the solids? I tried rice 3 different times and oatmeal as well. All with the same bad outcome. Would organic really make a big difference? I cannot give him anything else until the frequent bowel movements stop so fruit is out for now too. Anyone have any input?

Please pray that Jacob is okay and that all this is a result of an immature digestive system.. I will just die if something more is wrong... just die...Chat Icon

Well the one i saw today wasnt my normal ped and i didnt like her at all. She was a total moron. Wednesday i have an appt with my regular ped and i will discuss it further with him. But once he sees that Jacob isnt gaining weight properly i know he will be concerned. He mentioned last month at his 4 month check up.. that his weight was on the low side. So i know once he weighs him on wed he's gonna have some concerns. Thanks though!! I appreciate the hugs!!Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

but with the idea of celiac... although rice is naturally gluten free, if it was enriched, then it might not be. (not saying that he has celiac, just not to go by the rice theory) Chat Icon

a better explanation

How old is he now?
I know how frustrating it can be. We went through lots of ups and downs with Miranda and it can be so stressful. At some point I had to make myself stop worrying. She was growing and gaining, just very slowly and she was meeting her milestones.
Maybe his tummy is just developing a little slower and he's not ready for solids. They are not an absolute at this point. His main nutrition is from formula.
I hope that the new GI can give you some answers and help you to worry less.
I am so sorry for all that you have gone through with him.

Sounds like it could be a dairy allergy, this causes really bad GI problems, what formula is he on? If he is dealing with an allergy it affects EVERYTHING. What happens when he has rice cereal, is it vomiting, or gas, or diarrhea? The stool guiac will provide you with some answers, just make sure you sprad a different piece on each of the slides, take a littel bit from one side and smear it and a littel from the total opposite side for the other swab (sorry, TMI, but it is important). If the doc had any serious concerns they would of sent you for a work up immediately, there are los of liability issues for them, so try to breathe Chat Icon Chat Icon

I hope that once the tests results come back that you get some answers and he starts to feel better. I do have to aggree with monkeybride that some babies just gain slower then others --- but if he's been sick then hopefully they'll find a way to help him feel better!

Re: So frustrated/worried about my baby... (long)

Did the doctor recommend anything to help with the diarrea? This happened to my son months ago and the doctor told me to give him pedialyte instead of formula for about a day and 1/2 and it completely stopped the diarrea. I have no idea what caused it either but he didnt have a fever or any other symptoms. Please call the doctor again, I cant imagine waiting until Wednesday with those symptoms.

What if you give up on solids until 6 months...
???
Many people wait it out....he might not be ready.....

As far as diarrhea and vomitting go..... Ryan had this virus a few weeks ago, and it went on for days...

I didnt give any solids.... just water, pedialyte, and whatever formula I could get in... just to keep him hydrated!!!
