So heres the downside to the TRU wishlist, it backfired.

We did a TRU wishlist for the first time and sent it out to grandparents and our siblings only.

I sent it to one parent in Eddies class, after she asked.

However, apparently, from speaking to the parents at Eddies party, A LOT, if not most of them, searched for and found the wishlist on their own.

Here in lies the problem. We had more duplicate gifts than EVER, so the list kind of backfired. I guess what happens is people dont purchase online through the wishlist, or have it removed from the wishlist, as you would from a registry if they purchase in store. So the nest person thinks the items are still available and they purchase them.

Seriously, we must have received duplicates and even triples on almost every gift. Then bc people assume its something you dont have, and obviously want, bc its on the wishlist, only ONE person gave the receipt.

So now we have a bunch of duplicate items, none of which we can return.

This wishlist may seems to have backfired.

Can you adjust the wishlist like you can a registry and return items without a receipt within a certain period of time?

Hmmm, I wonder.

I dont know bc TRU has a notoriously strict return policy. Something to look into.

is the wishlist similar to the registry? when i got dups of stuff from DS's baby shower, I went on the registry and changed the number of received to how ever many i got. i was able to return the extras bc they thought their system screwed up.

That happened to a mom in Sarah's class last year. Everyone looked at the TRU wishlist, then bought the stuff from Target since it's usually cheaper there. She was not happy.

wouldnt you be able to print out the wishlist from the store and bring it to the counter? i did that with my baby registry and as long as they saw it on the list they let me return it.

as long as it's on your registry, you can definitely return it without a receipt - and you can DEFINITELY alter the registry online yourself to help the return process along...lol.

We had this problem too for my DS's first birthday.

My DH took the duplicates back to TRU and said we had a wish list. The girl didn't think she could do it, but it worked. We were able to get store credit for all of his duplicates.

No harm in trying. If they give you a hard time, ask for a manager, or go to a different TRU.

Edit the qty received on the wishlist then go back to the store. Even if you got an item that wasnt on the original wishlist, add it them mark it as purchased. .... you can return them all. FM me if you have any questions. Chat Icon

thanks everyone, it didnt even occur to me that they would take the list as proof of purchase!

Such a PITA though, I did not foresee this problem, especially since I didnt tell any parents about it. It was suppose to make lives easier.
