So I guess my sleep problem is due to not enough milk...
Last night Joseph was SOOO fussy from 5-7 (this is actually the 3rd night of that) and we gave him a 6oz bottle of pumped milk. Between fussing and screaming it took him an hour to drink it but he slept from 7:30pm-12:30am. Then I breastfed him and he only slept until 3:30 then again up at 5:30. He will only eat for about 10 minutes from the boob - I'm not sure why. I pump every now and then after his 10 minutes so I know I'm still producing milk - he just gets disinterested I guess. I'm going to try a bottle at bedtime tonight and see what happens - wish me luck (and sweet dreams!!! )

Danielle - how old is he?
I find that Talia only takes 10 minutes from each boob right now...I think it is normal that the time goes down as they get older since they are better at eating and your milk production has "leveled off" to give them what they need.

don't get discouraged....James really didn't take to my breast...until I was weaning him off. He wasn't strong enough to s u c k from my breast for long periods of time and the bottle was much easier for him.
My baby was a preemie....but as your baby gets older nursing should be easier.

Sorry I asked before you Fm'd me... How much milk do you get when you pump for 10 minutes? I think others on the board said the baby gets more milk than the pump does...if that helps at all.

Danielle - this is exactly what we do every night! When we give Alex the bottle she CHOWS down, and I mean CHOWS. Last night DH gave her a bottle and she ate 7 ounces We do that everynight before she goes to bed because (1) she's a cluster feeder at night and has an absolutely voracious appetite after 7pm that my body can't keep up with, and (2) it knocks her out for a good 5 hours.

I get all different quantities whenm I pump... Last night I got 6 oz between both and this am only 3.5. I have enough for 3 bottles now - I'll pump again tonight while DH feeds him his bedtime bottle.

Mine varies A LOT as well... sometimes I can get 5-6 ounces and sometimes only 3. It doesn't have anything to do with the time of day either. Make sure you drink enough fluids - I have noticed that the more water I drink during the day, the more I can get when I pump. Especially because I started working out now so I'm losing more fluids...

Re: So I guess my sleep problem is due to not enough milk...
You can't really equate the amount you pump to the amount your baby is getting in the same time frame. It works very differently and your body also responds differently to both methods. Your baby is still very young and 6week old do not always sleep more than 2-3 hours at a time. Also, eating takes a lot of energy for babies this small. It is normal for them to fall asleep while eating. Here are some tips to help though. When you nurse your baby do not have him bundled up tightly..he may be getting very warm and then falling asleep easier. Tickle his feet a bit- that helps them to stay alert while nursing. Pump milk after his feeding is a good idea to increase your supply and start to get a freezer supply of bm. Please let me know if I can help you at all.

Thank you! I pumped again after he ate @ 9:50 and got 3 oz again so if I keep doing that hopefully it'll work
