and she said "Are you serious?"Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

My coworker thinks shes just out of it because yesterday was her first day back in 2 weeks since her mom passed away...but I dont know....I am laughing because I dont want to cry!

The same coworker said it could also be because maybe shes not the type to give gifts so she was taken aback...thats totally fine with me if she doesnt give me anything - but I give - thats just my nature.

What would you make of that reaction?Chat Icon

I would be taken aback, but I guess she is still out of sorts because of the death in her family.......

Re: So I just gave my boss her holiday gift....

Well you could take it two ways..

She was so overwhelmed and surprised in a good way that she said "Are you serious?"

OR she thought your gift was crapola and said "Are you serious?'

I would go with choice #1Chat Icon

I think its a combination of things.

Your first day back after losing a parent is hard. Your consumed with your own grief and you can forget about whats going on outside your world. Maybe she put aside the fact that its the holiday season.

On top of that, When someone confronts you with a gift and you don't have anything for them, it can be embarassing. I'm sure her mind has been on other things lately and didn't think about giving gifts.

Also, I don't know if you usually give your boss a gift, but I don't. I also don't expect one from my secretary. I would be pretty surprised if she got me something.

I know about the rule, not to give up but I disregard it. I dont know why, I just do. I am sure she could by herself anything she wants but its just the way I was raised.

This is her second day back so I am sure shes consumed with other things and I dont blame her at all. I just wasnt expecting that reaction - a simple thank you would have been fine!

I would give her the benefit of the doubt. I was pretty out of it when I returned to work after the death of a parent. However, I probably wouldn't bother getting her a gift next year Chat Icon

Before! I dont know if she opened it yet- I havent seen her in 2 hours. It was just a scarf.

And about next year....I probably wont give her a gift. I might not even still be in this position next year Chat Icon

You are 100% right. That would have been the right thing to do.
