So, I took Gus to Gardiner's Park yesterday....
he had a ball, I let him off leash-he's really good about staying near me, and coming when I call, etc...he had a blast, he was racing through the trails, jumping all over the beach....it was a little strange when we were up on the field right near the parking lot, so many people had thier dogs leashed....I know they're all supposed to be leashed, but when I used to go to Coindre all the time, everyone would let the dogs go...I was just wondering if it's because it was a weekend day...and there were more people then normal....if maybe there were regulars there Monday-Friday who always let thier dogs play off leash together-does anyone know? It was still a great day, and Gus had a blast, I was just curious.....

Re: So, I took Gus to Gardiner's Park yesterday....
it's in bay shore, on Montauk Hwy. I live in sayville, so I just took Montauk hwy the whole way there....it was probably two or three miles west of 5th avenue, if you're heading west it's on the left hand side of the road. There's a big sign that says Gardiner's Park. I'm going to try to go during the week after work, and see how the crowd is....

When we go to Gardiner's Park I only unleash Bella when we get down to the beach. If she wasn't quite so hyper I would probably unleash her sooner but she most likely would run and jump on people or run up to other dogs. I know some people who walk there don't have dogs, so I am sure they don't want my large goofy dog bothering them. That's my reasoning.

Just so you know...they have park police patrolling there and most people don't take the dogs off-leash near the pond because they will write tickets. They are more accomodating on the trails and by the beach cuz you aren't right near the parking lot.

Re: So, I took Gus to Gardiner's Park yesterday....
I take Jasmine there every weekend!!! She LOVES it. I take her down to the beach and then walk to the right for another 5 min and I let her off the leash. This guy convinced me to let her off the leash by the pond, she did great for 5 minutes then I went to put her back on, took the treat out, and a mastiff came and tried to eat her treat and Jasmine got scared and ran away from the dog and my..she ran into the parking lot and this guy chased her, thank God she was okay but scary and I will NOT let her off the leash for a while...PS Jasmine is only 8.5 months so I will try it again someday... Maybe we can all meet up???? Love that park! I will be there on Sat/Sun

Re: So, I took Gus to Gardiner's Park yesterday....
okie dokie...oh well, I was hoping it would be more off leash friendly during the week...Gus loves to run with other dogs...we'll hit the trails and go to blydenburg for off-leash romping with other dogs....I'll still let him go off leash on the trails and on the beach...I wasn't thinking about it being unfenced by the parking lot, that's why so many people had thier dogs leashed there....we should all meet up!
