So lets talk oral surgeons
So yea- I finally went to the dentist and need 6 teeth extracted (4 wisdom and 2 molars)
The dentists exact words to me were "Im surprised your not taking your head and repeatedly banging it against the wall"
My dentist rec'd Dr. Capuano and Dr Schwatz- anyone have any feedback???
Also- am I crazy for doing all 6 teeth at once??? I dont have the time off to do it 2 seperte times, nor do I have the $$$ to be put out twice.
PLUS- I have such anxiety to begin with- Im scared if I go and have pain (which I know I will afterwards) I wont go back...
Any input??

Re: So lets talk oral surgeons
I had 4 pulled at one time so and I would rather it be done all at once, rather than 2 separate occasions.

Re: So lets talk oral surgeons
I don't know where you live but I went the Dr. Nelson in Hampton bays. He's the best oral surgeon from what I've heard. A lot of people that I know have used him. I used him twice (once for my top 2 wisdom teeth and once for my bottom 2 wisdom teeth). I didn't feel a thing either time and wasn't in pain like other people that I've known that have gotten their wisdom teeth removed. HTH.

Re: So lets talk oral surgeons
wow, you've analyzed everything.
If your dentist thinks doing it all at once is worth it, then go for it.
Sorry you have to have this done. I hear though that after a few days you will be fine.
Sorry, I don't know the surgeons.

I have used them for my EIGHT adult tooth extractions. Believe it or not, I have a small mouth Every one I know has used them, and my friend works for them. They're very good, I like Capuano better as a surgeon but he’s in the Coram office, the Coram office isn’t as nice as the Port Jeff office, but I would still pick Capuano personally.
ETA - I had the 4 adults done when I was about 13 and then the 4 wisdoms done when I was about 30, I would prefer to do them all at once, but I would ask the oral sugeon what is 'better' when you have a consultation.

Re: So lets talk oral surgeons
heh.... I did the EXACT same thing last winter! No regrets to have it all done at once. yeah, people said I was nuts, but frankly, I dislike the feeling of recovering from anaesthesia MUCH more than the pain. actually, it initially didn't hurt much at all... but then I got a dry socket. that hurt.... but I went to the Dr the next morning and he stuffed a clove extract thingy in my socket and it felt instantaneously better I can't imagine going through the hassel of eating mush and looking like a squirrel with nuts in its cheeks for several days TWICE. Once was enough for me
I liked the general anaesthesia, becuase I fell asleep right away, and woke up and it was all done! I went to Dr. Dominger in port jeff station, and had a great experience....
FM me if you want more info about my experience

Marissa - Dr. Schneider in Centereach (mark tree rd) is fantastic.
My brother, sister, and I all had all 4 wisdom teeth pulled by him - my Dad had some major work too.. and we all had great results.

Re: So lets talk oral surgeons
I went to Dr. Capuano for my wisdom teeth. He is right across from Dr. Scotto. When I got my wisdom teeth extracted, I paid extra to be knocked out. I think it was like 60 or 75 dollars but toally worth it. Dr. Capuano did my iv and the last thing I remember is speaking with him about sports and I was out. I woke up after it was all done and in a daze. I didn't have much pain. I got some nice pain meds to help me with any pain. I say get knocked out and go for the gusto. If you have any questions feel free to pm me. I am from Selden so the office was very local. I went to another surgeon for my root canal and he was good. Either way I have had really good results with every one that Dr. Scotto consulted me with.

Re: So lets talk oral surgeons
Do it on a Friday so it will leave you time to recover. You just have to be careful with dry sockets and some bleeding afterwards. Of course, like you said, there will be some pain but its very manageable...

Re: So lets talk oral surgeons
I don't have doctor suggestions...but when I was younger, I had 11 teeth taken out at once and I lived through it. Not the most fun I've ever had, but it's manageable. And 4 of the teeth were adult teeth taken fromt he gums, so there were some stiches involved. I think you can get it done all at once. Good luck! Thank how much better you'll feel after they're all gone!

Re: So lets talk oral surgeons
So how long should I expect to be in pain for???
If I had the surgery on Friday could I expect to go back to work on Monday morning?(my boss is gonna kill me )
How big of a difference do you think the 4 vs 6 will be 1 of the molars is so decayed there is hardly any tooth left to extract
ETA- Any moms out there who had c-sects??? How did the pain compare??? I recovered fairly fast from that- I know they are 2 different types of pain, but its the only surgery I have ever had

I don't know about 4 vs. 6, since I only had the 4 wisdom teeth taken out at once, but I had almost no pain at all. They gave me the pain meds, but I was scared to take them because I'd heard they can make you nauseated, so I just didn't and took Advil every few hours instead, and I was fine. It's wasn't super comfortable like normal, but it wasn't painful either.
Barring any strange complications, I'd say you should be back to work on Monday if you get it done on Friday morning. You might still be a little swollen, but should be feeling okay by then. I had mine done on a Wednesday and I took it easy for the next few days, but was generally back to normal activities by the weekend, and travelled back to college (in another state) on Sunday.

Re: So lets talk oral surgeons
I was recommended, by my PC doc and my regular dentist, to Dr. Lester Stein in Hauppauge. He was EXCELLENT and is rated as a top Oral Surgeon on LI. I was so happy with him - and needed all four WT removed. They were all impacted and I risked having some nerve damage so my dentist said he only wanted me going to him - no one else. I felt very confident and he was wonderful. HTH

Re: So lets talk oral surgeons
Marissa, I had to have 4 of my wisdom teeth done and chose to do them all at once. I am glad I did. 1 recovery and once you do it, you are done. PLus, like you said, only paying once for the sedation. I went to Sachem Dental on Broadway in Holbrook and had Dr. Gene Pezzolo who was GREAT. He was really nice and I just felt comfortable with him.
ETA: 2 were impacted so it was a bit more painful than normal pulling of a tooth. I took the Vicodin they gave me for 3 days and after that, I took some Motrin and was fine completely after a week. I would have been able to go back to work on that Monday, had I had it on a Friday, but everyone is different I guess. Just make sure to ice your face so you don't swell and to eat soft foods. It's not as bad as you think. I was soooooooo scared and it was a breeze really.

So I'm not alone! I had 8 pulled, at almost the same intervals, but my 2nd set was in my early 20s.
For my 2nd pulling, I had pain from one tooth, so the other 3 I didn't even notice. If I had them done in multiple sessions, I would have had pain each time, so I was glad to get them all out at once.

Re: So lets talk oral surgeons
Seriously Marissa ---- tooth pain IMO is up there with some of the worst pain POSSIBLE. I have had some pretty bad pain. I have severe arthritis in my back and was hit by a car in 2003, which made for a miserable week with my back. It took me months of PT to recover from that, yet the tooth pain I had was even worse, because it gives you severe migranes, messes with your vision, it's just the worst.
I had 2 wisdom teeth pulled, one of which when I was pregnant, so no pain killers, just local novacaine and tylenol after the fact. Compaired to the pain I was in BEFORE they were pulled, it was NOTHING. Granted I only did one at a time, but it was so OK. I had a chunk of my wisdom tooth break off and the root was exposed, and it was the most painful thing in the world. I'd take a c-section over that pain again, anyday, seriously.
My DH recently had 3 teeth pulled at once. His teeth are really bad. Within about 2-3 days he was feeling MUCH much better, and able to eat more normally again. And judging by his complaining (he barely ever stops) having the teeth pulled was not nearly as bad as the way he felt before having them pulled.
GOOD LUCK!

Re: So lets talk oral surgeons
I had 4 of my wisdom teeth done at once. Even had a little bone left since all four were impacted.
They gave me an IV and I was knocked out cold, woke up all done.
Had it done mid Friday... sat up all night with my pillows around me to avoid laying on either side. No dry socket !
Ate soft foods through Sunday and was back at work on Monday, no problems

Re: So lets talk oral surgeons
What is impacted exactly? The term never came up when we discussed the surgery.
Apparently my 4 wisdom teeth are coming in (some tooth is exposed on 2 of them- the other 2 are still in the gums) but there isnt enough room in my moth for them- so as they are coming in they are breaking the molars next to them-
The molars then begin to decay (because they are broken) and it seems to be spreading from there...
the 2 molars they are extracting are already "out" so they shouldnt be as painful as the wisom teeth right?
Im a nervous wreck-can you tell?
