so my brother is thinking of selling me his car
he has a 2005 toyota rav 4 he paid around 15k for it put 6k down and finaced the rest. how can I pay him so that this winds up being a fair deal for the both of us?

I don't think how much he paid is really relevant (though $15K for 2005 seems CHEAP - I have a 2005 Rav4, and paid way more that that).
Look up what a fair market value is for the car on edmunds or cars.com, and go from there.

that's the problem with buying from relatives. You want to make him whole, but the car may not be worth it.
If you find that it's reasonable for the car, I would take it to the mechanic first. You don't want to fight if the car breaks down.
