So my granddaughter went to the neuroligist because of flatness of her head...
and the dr. said she doesn't need a helmet!! Thank goodness!! We were so relieved. She's 6 mos. 1 wk old. Dr. said as long as she's developing and reaching milestones (sitting up, rolling over, etc) and she's spending very little time on her back these days (except for sleeping at night) then she should be just fine. She said it will probably just reform itself and if not, she's a girl and will grow her hair and it won't be noticeable (unless she grows up and decides to shave it, the drs. words!) Anyway, she said it's not bad enough to warrant it and it won't affect her development or brain growth at all. She also said they like to do it when babies are under 4 mos old. She said especially with summer coming and having to wear it 22 hrs. a day and she'd be sweating, uncomfortable etc. She tested her reflexes, she shone a light in her eyes and around her to see if she followed it and she did. She laid her on her stomach and she pushed herself right up on her hands and lifted her head way up to look around. So we were very happy!!

Re: So my granddaughter went to the neuroligist because of flatness of her head...
That's wonderful news! As a former "helmet mom" I know how difficult it can be emotionally on a parent to have a child that needs one. However, I'm surprised that the doctor was focusing so much on just the milestones and development; the helmets are normally used to correct the misshapen head, not because they cause developmental issues, but because heads normally do not reshape themselves after a certain age and also because if it does get worse, it can cause other, non-developmental issues. VERY happy for your granddaughter, but just wanted to throw that out there for other parents.
