SO PROUD OF A "bad" REPORT
my son has a learning disability. reading, writing, language (in general) is difficult for him. i've had a very hard time between "baby-ing" him or pushing him.
this year, he started jr high. i've been worried for him, since he's also very shy.
today, he had his very first written project due, and i was FREAKING OUT that his road to failure had started.
well, i am VERY PROUD to announce that he wrote his report without any help. it had to be at least 250 words, i didn't think he had it in him (but i never let him know that).
so, here it is!!!! he wrote this all by himself. MOMMY DID NOT HELP! it's full of mis-spelled words and some incomplete sentences. but he did it!!!!!
Fooled by Nature: Migration
I saw Fooled by Nature on Tuesday. My dad, mom, cousin, and me saw it and it was about migration things about the five animals they go and do also one thing about one of anyone of them is not true. My family was trying to figure out with one it is and what it was that was not true.
I learned a lot for starters I learned that the show is pretty fun and the show talks about five animals and what they do during migration. Like going some where far and things like that. The five animals are the wildebeests, bull shark, careabo, red crabs, and butterflies. The first animal of the group is the wildebeest in Africa. It smells that is in the grass that humans can’t smell. Each one smells it in a path, a path they follow to plan land to give birth to young babies. As they go to a plan land they face dangers animals are crocodiles and lions. There path can’t take another route so some will get killed by the crocodiles and lions. When they get to the planes they soon then give birth.
The second animal is the bull shark. Bull shark females for migration they go from there slat water to fresh water and to give birth as well as the wildebeest. Has no limited time to get bake. They have been seen in places in the world. In the fresh water they go up a stream to give birth.
For the third animal in the show is the monarch butterfly. They started in Mexico ended in Canada and on the way they give birth to babies under some plate leafs or so. Milk weed is what they ate to live. As a spider they’ve died in Canada.
The caribou was the forth in the count down to the last one. The caribou’s migration is that they take a route that was to North America but the mosquitoes keep “bugging them”. So to get away the run to higher ground or by getting in some near by water. So many of them die or are weakened by the lost of so much blood or not enough food. They have must have lost energy from the constant running away from the mosquitoes.
The last one was the red crabs on Christmas Island. Red crabs have lost the ability to swim so they live in boroughs in the ground. They have to go to the sea to give birth at sea. As they go to sea, the males lead and the females follow. Now there are cities it’s much harder for the crabs to get to the sea. So many have been crushed by some cars. It seems about thousands are killed but to them it seems as only of 100%, that it’s 1% died and they continue their journey.
I learned bull sharks can swim in fresh water and have no time limit in fresh water. Red crabs lost the ability to swim. Wildebeests can smell chlorophyll something we may never have noticed.
It was great and it’s something you may remember well.

Re: SO PROUD OF A "bad" REPORT
I have a friend who teaches 8th grade -I've seen some of her 'better' students' papers - this blows them away - I'm not a teacher or a parent, but this doesn't look like it was written by a kid who has any difficulties - Spelling and Grammar aside - He articulates his ideas and opinions in a very organized paper -
Congrats to him !! I hope he's as proud of himself as you are of him !!!

Great job!!
Even if he does have language difficulties, the effort he put into this really shows!! You must feel so proud, not only that he tried his heart out, but that he did such a good job!
Seriously, as someone else pointed out, he really did organize that report VERY well. Great job. I hope it's a sign of more great work to come!!
I can see why you're proud!!

Re: SO PROUD OF A "bad" REPORT
OK, this is truly an amazing accomplishment. I don't work with learning disabled students, but have dealt with many in my lifetime. The organization of this paper is phenomenal for a boy who you say has such a disability. He has paragraph structure, a beginning, middle, and end, he realized that when he needed to "start" a new subject on a different animal he had to began a new paragraph, and for the most part...he followed the order and direction of any good paper.
He obviously has spelling and grammatical errors, but those are all much easier to correct and teach over time, than trying to teach a kid with top-notch spelling and grammar abilities how to write an organized and well thought-out paper!!!!
Amazing job and lots of gold stars today for your boy!!!!
Hope he enjoyed his favorite meal (I think he even deserves a new toy or game!!!)
PS> LOVED the line about the mosquitoes "bugging" the caribou!!! Awesome pun--and he probably had no idea he did it!!! So cool!
