So proud of Alex
Remember I posted about a little girl, Ava, who was bullying Alex? I've talked with Alex about it every night and we even role play with her imaginary friend "Gogo" on how to respond to hitting and bullying.
So wouldn't you know it - I walk into school yesterday to pick her up, and as I'm walking in, I see Ava come up from behind Alex, unprovoked, and push her really hard.
Alex turned around, and said "Don't push me Ava, I'm not going to play with you when you are mean", ran to the teacher, told her and then played with another little girl, and refused to play with Ava for the rest of the time. The look on Ava's face was PRICELESS -------->
And to boot, the late care teacher told me that Ava has been rather mean lately, and made another little girl cry yesterday, and Alex and her other little friend came up to her, hugged her and told her to play with them instead They told her she could be part of the "sillies", as they call themselves
I am just sooooooooo proud of my little girl for standing up for herself without resorting to similar physical violence or name calling

Re: So proud of Alex
Great job!!! I really believe you need to teach kids how to stand up for themselves.
When my oldest was in Pre K, one of the little girls in the room was just so difficult. One of the other moms approached me about going to the Director and was shocked when I wouldn't, instead I proposed teaching the girls how to respond. Part of me felt guilty that the moms (a lawyer and dentist) were writing our 4 year old's material but in all seriousness we empowered our kids and they learned how to stand up for themselves.
The truth is mean difficult kids will always exist and there are all sorts of reasons why kids act out. The only power I have is to teach my kid how to respond. Believe it or not this is a skill she is still using in middle school.
So good for you and Alex, so much better to know how to take care of yourself than have a mom who intervenes all the time.

Re: So proud of Alex
Your Alex is so special!!
It's wonderful that she's standing up for herself but it's even nicer to hear that she's standing up and comforting other children who are bullied too. Great job, mom!

This is EXACTLY my thoughts on the issue - I don't want Alex to have to run to me and rely on me everytime she has an issue with another child. I want her to learn how to navigate through these things on her own, using her own confidence and strength. The most I can do is give her the tools to make the right decisions, choose the right friends, and stand up for herself in a productive, healthy way
