SO sad! BFing moms... please help!

I am devestated! For the past 2 days DS is refusing to nurse. He sucks for about 3 minutes then starts screaming. I have had to give him all bottles of pumped milk. It is heartbreaking when he sucks the bottle down and refuses me. I called LLL and they said to stop all pacifiers and bottle... but how can I not feed my baby... I nurse and try as long as possible... but then he needs to eat! I am so upset and at a loss for what to do. Nursing was going great and now Im a wreck over this.
Has this happened to anyone else what do I do? DS is 10 weeks!

How old is he? There can be many factors.

I'm not sure how old your dc is, but i had the opposite where dd won't accept the bottle. There were a few times where she did get fussy at the breast and I think it was because my let down was too fast for her and she couldn't keep up. Maybe this could be the problem? Maybe pump for a little and then get him on so that the let down won't be so fast. I wouldn't stop giving the bottle and starve your baby just so he will nurse. You are doing the right thing by giving him a bottle. And the fact that it's a bottle of breast milk is great on top of that!

It could be many things. Have you changed body soap or laundry detergent? Maybe he wants a quicker flow so he is getting frustrated. Definitely stick with it though. Do the combo of bottles & breast. I agree that you can't just not feed him but keep offering your breast. Have you tried a different hold when feeding? Sometimes positioning can change things.

This happened to me, too! It was like a fire hose! Think about how it would feel if someone was pouring something down your throat and you couldn't keep up. I would try to pump a little out first and then offer. Good luck!

I have always had an oversupply and it sprays all over.

In the beginning I would do a cross hold and have his head almost ontop of my boob. That way he was looking down on my nipple. Gravity then helps a bit.

If I were you, I would give bottle for a minute, then put him on breast. I think having him hungry is only going to frustrate him more.Chat Icon

If the pumping beforehand doesn't work, maybe try a Nipple Shield. That should slow down the let down....or at least stop it from spraying out like that.

My friend who went through this same exact problem did end up stopping the bottle. A painful day later the baby was nursing again. Not easy, but works. Chat Icon

This happened to me when DS was about 3 weeks old. I started pumping just a minute or two before feeding him and it helped a lot. All in all it lasted about a week. I cried every time I had to feed him because it was so frustrating. But then either he got the hang of it again or my milk supply adjusted and it all started working.

I know how stressful it is and how awful you feel. Hang in there Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I had an oversupply too. For LC said not to pump, cause BF'ing supply and demand and pumping will make your oversupply worse.

She told me to do what Janice did and not to feed baby when she was starving, get her right before she worked herself up. So what i used to do is wait for let down, unlatch DD, hand express til the firehose stream stopped, then i latched her back on. If she wasn't starving she'd wait the 30 seconds for the stream to slow instead of drowning and fussing.

you can also feed on a 45 degree angle, gravity helps.

It takes a couple weeks but if you try some different techniques you supply could regulate and let down not so forceful. It worked for me.

Whatever you do, i wouldn't pump, it'll just create more of a supply IMO. Oversupply is not a good thing in my book, it's painful for mommy and baby and for me it lead to other issues like mastistis and constant clogged ducts.

Has AF returned recently? I've read that your hormones can change the taste of your milk and/or the smell of your skin and then make DC less interested in nursing...

It must be really hard to see him refuse you....I hope it gets better for you.Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

me too! fire hose is a great descriptor for what it is like! and it is sooo frustrating to hear the baby cry and not take the breast when you know they are hungry. can you get a lactation consultant to come? she helped me enormously! some tips she gave me...
feed every two hours until it improves. do only one breast at a feeding until it improves.
do NOT pump for now, it will make it worse. express a little with your hand so that baby can latch.
try the football hold and elevate dc's head as much as possible. kellymom shows some other positions for oversuppliers
use cabbage leaves and icepacks to get the supply down

Thank you so much ladies... I tried all your suggestions and today is much better.... he will nurse for about 5-10 min then start the screaming... better then yesterday... wouldnt nurse at all. I just top him off with the bottle when he gets hysterical... hopefully this works itself out... glad to hear other experience this.
