So thinking about a south hempstead home in RVC and my dh has a concern...

My dh was asking me do you think that if we lived in S hemp but had rvc schools our kids would be singled out for not being a rvc person. The house I want to look at is right off Long Beach Road on Stratford Road in S.Hempstead, 2 blocks form covert elem.. I never relaly thought about this.

I always feel like I want my kids to live in the town they are going to school in. DH found a house in westbury with Jericho schools. I didn't end up going to see it bc of my statement above. we can't comfortably afford to live in Jericho so I woudln't want to send the kiddies to school w/ the kids that (easily) can! I hope I am making sense

I'm sure some kids would notice and be snotty about it. But most wouldn't even notice.

Im sorry but I strongly disagree. I live in the Northeastern most part of Hicksville. The district line that separates Hicksville and Syosset SDs runs straight through our property. NYS Education law allows the owners of such properties to choose and designate which of the two districts they want without paying tuition while paying taxes in the zip code in which the house is. This was a major selling point of our house. Our taxes are low (by LI standards) and we have the benefit of one of the top school districts on LI. If we lived one block north, our taxes would be about 4-5k (or higher)more than what we pay now. We could not afford to live in Syosset and pay Syosset taxes (where DH grew up), but we CAN afford where we are now.

We already designated our district as Syosset by taking the deed of our home, utility bills as well as a map provided by the county showing the division line. We have the paperwork and in 3 years, Abby will start kindergarten in the Syosset SD. We already got library cards for all 4 of us as well at the Syosset Library.

Both Jericho and RVC are ranked even better than Syosset and frankly, if that opportunity arose and we had been looking in those areas for homes, we would have grabbed that opportunity too. Do I care that my post office is not the same as my school district? No. I got a real estate coup. Best of both worlds - low taxes and great schools. To me, it was about giving our family the best we could afford.

BTW, a friend of mine from college's kids were friendly with the previous owner's kids. They were not singled out.

Having grown up in RVC and now raising my kids here, it is not my experience that kids from South Hempstead are treated differently/badly.

NOT at all!!! I dont think most kids will even know! Some of DH's cousins grew up in South Hempstead, RVC schools and loved it... I technically lived in Baldwin but it was Oceanside schools as did many of my friends and I cant ever remember one single comment being made!

I dont think that matters at all! I went to Plainedge, which is a mix of all towns pretty much. The only town part of Plainedge goes to Island Trees...but anyway we had kids from Bethpage, Massapequa, Seaford, Farmingdale. I don't think it matters at all!

BTW, we are looking in South Hempstead too for the same reason. You cant beat RVC schools with the better prices. Love it!

We were going to look at a house the other day. It's S. Hempstead, RVC schools, but closer to Baldwin. The area looked ok, but looked sketchy if you went further down on Grand Ave. Anyone know how it is over there? It was on Webber.

I dont know about that but I personally think that's the best deal in town... avoid village taxes and benefit from one of the best districts on LI (not to mention the country)!

I wouldn't worry about

I went to 3 village schools but my address was Centereach. None of the kids made fun or anything like that. Then we moved to Dix Hills schools but lived in wheatly heights for a while - no one ever said anything...

I knew a bunch of people who grew up here and it was never an issue for them. I think just in case it also helps that a good chunck of the children in their elementary school will be in the same situation, so they will always have someone.
