So this is how Mitt Romney really feels about SAHM?

"Even if you have a child two years of age, you need to go to work ... I'm willing to spend more giving daycare to allow those parents to go back to work... I want the individuals to have the dignity of work."

So does this mean he thinks it's undignified of his wife to stay home?

That was taken out of context though, he was referring to welfare moms.
I still don't like him though.

Re: So this is how Mitt Romney really feels about SAHM?

He doesn't mean the families that support themselves, he means those on welfare

As much as I think he is a jackass, he was talking about women on welfare who use their kids as a reason not to work.

Not a fan of Mitt Romney but he wasn't talking about all SAHMs.

hes referring to moms on welfare. I agree that mothers should not depend on welfare to SAH. it is not the responsibility of fellow americans to pay to keep you home. if you can't afford to be home, work.

I agree that if you can't afford to stay home, you need to work (minus a reasonable materinity leave for a newborn). Many women are forced to make that choice, even if it's not what they want. It would be unfair to those who do work, despite their desire to stay home with their child, to give welfare to those who don't work because they have children at home.

At the same time, given the astronomical cost of daycare, I think in general more assistance should be given for daycare/preschool. Free/subsidized daycare with proof of all adult househeld members employed for a certain number of hours per week. Or in school.

Wait a minute. Dignity of work means that they should know what it is to work and have that responsibility. That is a general statement. If you can afford to stay home and raise your kids does that mean you don't have dignity?

The correct statement should be that if I am willing to foot the bill to pay for day care or child care to give you the opportunity to work and have a career. Also, to pay for schooling to give you more of a chance of succeeding.

He is grossly out of touch.

.

That's not how I am interpreting it. I am interpreting the reference to dignity to mean--they should have the dignity to support themselves and not have to rely on welfare. There is a dignity to being able to support yourself and your family (and I'm referring to a family as a unit- if one spouse works and the other stays home, they are both supporting the family, both have "dignity").

I get what he's saying about getting off welfare, but the underlying message sounds to me like he thinks to be a SAHM is not real work, that he thinks you have to get out and earn a living to consider that work.

Re: So this is how Mitt Romney really feels about SAHM?

I think plenty of welfare moms have dignity. They are doing the best they can. They need more support than someone to watch their kids.

Some do abuse the system but there are plenty of others who are stuck..fathers mia..no direction, no education and no help with that.

No. He isn't saying anything negative about stay-at-home-moms. At all.

I don't even like the guy but sometimes the way people spin things is absolutely ridiculous.

It's so important as voters to be informed and not rely on snippets or out-of-context tweets to get a "full" story.

So instead of paying for welfare we are paying for childcare. It's the same thing.

HE is willing to pay more for childcare so that they can work. How about he actually pay more period?
