So, um, yeah we bought a new car today and drove it home...
only to find out that they never bothered to take care of the insurance for the car! I called my insurance company this morning and they told me to have the deal call them and they'll take care of it, so I gave all my info to the dealer, etc., we sign all the paper work, blah, blah, they come back with a seal envelope, tell us everything we need is in the envelope and we drive off. When we got home it dawned on me that they never mentioned the insurance and so we called and the salesman says, "Oh, whoops, we have the card right here, you can swing by and pick it up," my husband gets there and then the salesman tells him, "I told the girl in the back to make the phone call and she never did." I'm just flabbergasted at the fact that a dealer let us drive off in a new car without even checking if they had the insurance card. Then on the other hand, I cannot believe WE drove a brand new car off the lot without checking if the insurance was taken care of! We're total dopes!! But dopes with a new car

When I got my truck the dealership put the wrong VIN on my registration. After 3 days and numerous phone calls they told me I had to come in right away because I could be arrested if I got pulled over. Technically I was driving a stolen vehicle because the paperwork all had the wrong VIN except my insurance because we did that ourselves. I made them come to my house to do the paperwork - I had to resign everything with the right VIN on it. When I went in a week later to get something done to it they told me it happened to 3 other people as well that week. They gave me 3 free oil changes because of it.

congrats on the car!
isn't it the responsibility of the driver to obtain insurance and not the dealer? perhaps i am wrong but that was always my understanding. when i bought a car in march the dealer did ask for proof of insurance before i drove off the lot but never did they mention obtaining insurance for me.

Well, I've done it both ways, but they asked for my current insurance card and said they'd take care of it. I'd say we were both at fault, cause we should have double checked. I just can't believe that happened!
We didn't get a very exciting car, but a practical, family vehicle because I better get knocked up again soon So we got an Elantra since I love my Santa Fe.
