so what happens when DC starts to insist on picking out their own clothes for the day?

do I have to go out and buy a whole new wardrobe?

Because now DS only wants to wear stuff that has cars or boats on them.

Today's outfit is swimtrunks (they actually have surfboards, not boats) but it was close enough, and his pajama top that has a safari jeep on it.

Luckily, they match perfectly!

But that's all I have that's clean!

This is a big struggle for us. I have one drawer where I only put two shirts and two shorts (all matching) and let him pick from there. Otherwise, it can be a mismatched disaster. If he says he wants to wear the shirt with the boat on it, I tell him it's dirty and in the washing machine. He then says I need to do laundry! LOL

DD sometimes gets picky about her clothes too.

If she is in the mood, I let her pick out something, other times I find that giving her a choice of 2 outfit helps.

My DD always picks out the clothes she wears to preschool but I give her a choice of 3 things and that is it -she is happy she gets to choose and I am happy she is not going to school in a wooly sweater and boots in june.

Edited to add - your DS is SO adorableChat Icon

That's a great idea.

I will let him pick from 2 outfits.

hopefully it works.

He does the same thing with his diapers.

I'm so there now. We're just coming off of 5 days of "dressing like a princess." She pulled the dress of her choice out of her closet and insisted she wear it... if I tried to make her wear a different dress she told me "that doesn't match me."

Yesterday I had to explain to Elizabeth that she couldn't wear her Easter dress and white dress shoes to day care. Chat Icon

I try to compromise most of the time - I tell myself it's okay if the outfit she chooses isn't "cute" the way I would want it to be so long as she's dressed appropriately, i.e., machine washable (if she's going to day care), weather appropriate etc.

I'm trying to do the same, but last week, he wanted to wear his snow boots with shorts and a t-shirt and had a fit when I wouldn't let him.Chat Icon

Chat Icon He's adorable!

On normal days when DD goes to MIL's, I just pack clothes for her. But on the weekends, I let her choose between 2 outfits/dresses too....I'm soooooo not ready to give up control of what she wears Chat Icon Chat Icon I let her pick between 2 pairs of PJs at night normally too.

My DS never seemed to care, DD on the other hand Chat Icon . My rule with is that she can pick out her shirt OR bottom, but not both that way I know she matches. This works really well and she is always happy with what she is wearing.

My DD is actually better at picking clothes than meChat Icon I started to let her pick whatever she wants as long as its weather appropriate and so far she has combined some really cute outfits!

Definately did not get that gene from her mamaChat Icon

Re: so what happens when DC starts to insist on picking out their own clothes for the day?

I have taught DD about matching Chat Icon

So, she will pick something out and then ask if it matches...if it does, I let her wear it, if not, I tell her to pick something else.

It has gotten to the point that she now picks her underwear with the same colors as her clothes and asks if they match Chat Icon

Summer is easy, because she only wants to wear dresses and we don't need two pieces Chat Icon

Um, no help here - apparently DD should have a closet filled with only green dresses. That is all she wants to wear every day! And we don't even OWN a green dress Chat Icon

And I'm not buying one now - then every day will be a struggle when it's in the wash!

Re: so what happens when DC starts to insist on picking out their own clothes for the day?

That was me when I was little. My mom got big ziplocks and put complete outfits in them including socks and underwear. I could pick which bag I wanted, that way she knew I matched but I still got to choose.

Right now my DS is 2. He let's me pick his clothes but he picks his socks. I had to hide our halloween socks because they are his favorite and now that he's wearing shorts everyone can see his socks. Chat Icon Chat Icon
