So What Part Of The Note Didn't The Teacher Understand?

Nicholas is not allowed to play on recess or participate in gym for 2 weeks as per the doctor because he's still healing from the surgery. I sent a note in yesterday and his dad even dropped off the doctor's note to the office. Today Nicholas comes home and says he went on recess and played on the equipment. I said why...he said "MOM! they can't leave the children inside alone" Well, this is a huge school and there has to be something else for him to do during that time. I'm fuming Chat Icon

I just wrote a note to the teacher telling her if other accomodations can't be made for him during those times then she needs to call me and I will leave work and come supervise him in the classroom.

I just don't understand how she can blatantly ignore two notes stating the same thing Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: So What Part Of The Note Didn't The Teacher Understand?

In fairness to the teacher, I know that in our school, it's not the teacher's responsibility to find something else for the children who can't play to do. It's also not their responsibility to make sure they sit out. It's the nurse's job, as well as the people on lunch and recess duty. Hopefully it will get rectified tomorrow.

I would expect a teacher to ensure the child is not at recess. They get paid a lot of $ - the last thing I would want to hear if my child gets hurt is "uhh - that isn't my responsbility - I thought the lunch aide was covering that"

Re: So What Part Of The Note Didn't The Teacher Understand?

I would think since the teacher is the first line of communication, she would handle it and inform the nurse, etc. Perhaps I'm wrong, but I'll get to the bottom of it tomorrow. I'm expecting she will call me after she reads the note that was pretty firm.

I'm also upset that it's being counted against him on his "reward chart" that he is not eating his snack or lunch in a timely fashion. Yeah well, maybe it's because he just had his tonsils out! Chat Icon

Well, I can only speak for my school, and I highly doubt any of our teachers would respond with, "Uhhh, that isn't my responsibility." Chat Icon And I don't see what money has to do with itChat Icon
I'm not saying it's right, but it's a reality.

In my DD's school, if they can't do recess they sit in the nurses office and color or help the nurse. Why can't they do that?

Rachel I agree with most of what you are saying but she wrote the note to the teacher which IMO totally makes her responsible to pass off that info to the nurse or whomever would be watching Nicholas at that time, no?

Maybe they can? Who knows really, but maybe his teacher just didn't care about my note. He has more needs than the rest of the children and I'm not so sure she is keen on that, so this is just another one of the needs she would have to meet. The more I think about it, the more mad I get. IF it was something I had to deal with the nurse directly about, she should have told me that from the start. I even wrote her a note prior to the surgery telling her what days he would be out and when he gets back he wouldn't be able to participate in gym or recess.

And before anyone says I'm slamming teachers, I'm not. I've loved all of his teachers. Up until this year that is.

Thats actually not a bad idea. I wouldnt send the note you are writing. That will only upset the teacher. Do you need that? Why dont you write the nurse or call the nurse and tell them directly what you need.

Summer maybe you should send a Dr's note to the nurse as well that outline his restrictions

I dont think youre slamming teachers in any way.

Id be FUMING. This is completely unacceptable!

What if something could have happened (God forbid) in that time frame that he shouldnt have been playing around.

There are ALWAYS things set in place for what a child can do when not allowed to play recess.

I hope it gets resolved and you at least get an apology . Chat Icon

It's obvious you have issues with this teacher, but please remember she's a person, too. I agree with Rachel in that it's not the teacher's responsibility to find something for your son to do, so she probably (hopefully) just passed the info along to the proper people and they messed up.

Perhaps rewrite your note in a nicer tone, just reminding her of your son's needs. As a teacher, I would appreciate the second note and make SURE the child didn't go out for recess the next day.

Re: So What Part Of The Note Didn't The Teacher Understand?

Summer, I definitely didn't think you were slamming teachers, my point was just that sometimes, when a teacher tells the lunch aide to send so and so to the nurse after lunch to sit out for recess, that doesn't necessarily mean that they remember to do it. While it would be nice if the teacher went to check, most teachers wouldn't because honestly, they shouldn't have to check.
I was just trying to give the teacher the benefit of the doubt and basically say that it could have been a genuine mistake, but since you already have issues with this teacher, chances are you are right and it was her carelessness. I hope it gets taken care of tomorrow!!!Chat Icon

I agree, two of my best friends are teachers and they would have made sure that the nurse got the note or gotten in touch with the parent if it wasn't in their power to do anything/follow through with what you instructed. Def contact the nurse as she is prob the most imp't person who needs to know about itChat Icon

I honestly would think that three notes (one prior to surgery, two after) would have been sufficient and she wouldn't need reminding. I have a feeling someone was informed because Nicholas made that comment I posted above, so someone must have said that to him. I feel bad because he thinks he is in trouble for playing on the playground. He said he wasn't running out there, he was walking, he promises Chat Icon

I just left a voice mail for the nurse.

Re: So What Part Of The Note Didn't The Teacher Understand?

I would definitely contact the nurse directly. It's possible that the teacher just forwarded the note to the nurse, assuming she would take care of it.

I teach middle school, but there are definitely times that a student who can't participate in gym is supposed to head to study hall and for one reason or another, it takes a few days to work the kinks out.

ETA: Sorry, I must have been typing when you replied. I think reaching out directly to the nurse is the best step.

I would be furious as well.

I would be faxing the main office in addition to speaking to the nurse. If his doctor is saying his activity is restricted post surgery, I would expect his note would be taken very seriously.

Re: So What Part Of The Note Didn't The Teacher Understand?

I think extra attention needs to medical issues..... what if you had a note "DC can't eat peanuts because of a severe allergy", but the teacher decided it would be easier to give everyone peanuts anyway.... I think it's a similar scenario. It's a medical condition (at least temporarily). I can understand if the teacher ignored you if you said "DS can't play because he's being punished at home.", but this isn't like that....

Rather than sending in another note, I would CALL and speak to the nurse as well as the teacher and make sure it is clear he cannot participate in any activities yet.

I agree...as being the teacher, I would think it is her responsibility to find that that child is being taking care of, it is HER student. Talk to the nurseChat Icon

Re: So What Part Of The Note Didn't The Teacher Understand?

I think my blood pressure just went up 100 points. OMG I'm fuming!!

She just called me, with an attitude, and said she felt my note was directing my anger at her. Um, who else should I be angry at?! She is the first person in the chain of command here. She explained that she is at lunch when he is (of course I knew that), and she would talk to the lunch lady. Then she went on to blame Nicholas and said it's his responsibility to not play on the equipment and she told him that. I told her we both know he is impulsive at times and that isn't realistic. Also, If she told him that..then obviously she sent him out for recess with the lunch lady! She said other kids sit out. Nicholas isn't other kids. She said well he can sit in the office in a snotty tone. Well that's fine, I sent him in puzzle books and stuff for him to do because that's where I figured they would send him.

Then she went on to say AGAIN how my letter was angry and she is giving it to the vice princpal to call me. She was sort of turning it around on me like how dare I get upset that the doctor's orders weren't followed. That's A-Okay with me though!! I'd LOVE to talk to the VP about it.

And my letter wasn't even too bad. I toned it down A LOT. It was firm but by no means was it nasty.
