i would start looking in january and febraury. retirees have usually announced their intent by then as well as anyone taking a full-year off. my position that i;m in now was advertised ONCE in ONE ad in february and it was never advertised again. i wasn't interviewed until May.

All public schools post their vacancies, particularly LI. the city has thier own process, usually region wide job fairs. the ads are really the only way to know of job openings unless you know someone that can gurantee you a job. you must look at nytimes.com, olasjobs.org, the BOCES site, etc. to find postings.
