We went to a couple of houses a few weeks ago and will go to some more as soon as we have time. Just getting a feel for what's out there and what we like. We also bought Home Buying for Dummies! We aren't actually planning on buying for another year, but I know it takes many people a really long time to find something they like.

Re: So who else is just dipping their toes..
We are going to our first open house tomorrow. I'm exicted! Like others have said, we will not be ready until the end of the summer but i want to see what is out there. Just hope we don't fall in love with something yet.

That would be us!! We went to 6 open houses today. We saw 2 that we really liked but were just out of our price range. We're hoping to buy soon.

We're starting to look this summer but I don't think we'll be serious until fall or winter.
I'm really looking forward to see what I can and can't afford

Where are you going?
99% sure Atlanta
but part of me still wants to move to Flordia (my Dad and brother live there and my grandma spends 1/2 the year there)

I bought that book for DH when we started looking - it's really great, and one of the few books I actually saw him reference on several occasions.
It took us the entire first yr of our marriage to find something and buy it (married 10/28/05, closed 10/18/06) so I def. recommend getting out there to scoop neighborhoods/what's out their in your price range.
Good luck!

Re: So who else is just dipping their toes..
We have been doing the open house circuit on and off for about a year - we feel like just now we are more focused on what we are looking for and got a good sense of different neighborhoods. It was good to do it, because we were able to eliminate certain types of houses and neighborhoods we don't want.

We have been looking for about 4 months and have found zip nada zilch nothing.
We are taking a hiatus for a while. It's depressing and frustrating.
Good luck in your search!

Re: So who else is just dipping their toes..
we looked at a cute one today - but no backyard (you can't see that in the mlsli pictures!)
i know we are not going to get everything in a house this first time around, but looking at what you get for the money is getting our but in gear to start saving

Re: So who else is just dipping their toes..
We're starting to look at some open houses too. Just trying to see what type of house we like best and what is out there for what we are pre-approved for. We're hoping to find something by the end of the summer, but we're not in any real rush.

Us too!! We stumbled upon one and we loved it but it was out of our price range. I completely imagined myself living there.

Re: So who else is just dipping their toes..
when you guys are looking around but not looking to buy right this moment - how far off your price range are you looking?
Like if you think you can afford a house for low 400's are you looking at houses in the 500's?
I know I am doing a lot of this "just for fun" now -- but I am trying to figure out how much if anything you can expect a house to come down in price
