So..I know this was innocent, but..

Johnnys teacher is fully aware of his peanut allergy. There is an epi pen in the room with instructions should god forbid he ever need it.

Well today there is a box of chocolate hearts with PEANUT BUTTER FILLING in his backpack with a note that says "Happy Valentines day Johnny! Love, Ms Julia".

When I picked him up she told me she left treats in his bag that he could have when we were in the car.

Of course I saw the peanut butter in big letters on the bag...and didn't give him any even though he was now crying cause I told him he could have one....

Just makes me nervous, you know?? I will have to say something to her next week when I see her...I do know she's a sweet lady and it wasn't intentional but a bit scary!!

Yikes. That is scary. I would just very nicely thank her for thinking of him, but, also remind her of the allergy.
Also, with the PB scare, even if DS wasn't allergic, I'd still be nervous giving it to him.Chat Icon

Re: So..I know this was innocent, but..

Yeah...I'm definitely going to approach it in a nice way...

It's weird to me also because the classroom is a peanut free one on all accounts, we are never supposed to send our kids in with peanut/treenut products so it surprised me.

DH thinks she may not have realized they were peanut butter filled..which may be the case. It says it in big letters across the top of the bag, but she might have grabbed them last minute without realizing...

I would be livid. Peanut allergies are serious. Even if there are no confirmed allergies in the class room most places that care for children have rules regarding peanut products. I am sure it was innocent but it is unacceptable to put a child in danger like that.

Wow as a teacher I'd be in big trouble if I did something like that. I'd definitely say something & casually mention "isn't the school/class peanut-free".

Maybe she didn't realize they even had peanut butter in them? Maybe she just grabbed a few bags in the store and didn't pay attention?

Doesn't make it any less bad, but I would think she probably didn't even realize it

I would defiantly say something.. just as a reminder to her that he has this allergy.

Our day care center has a sign that says it is peanut free but I wonder how many parents and even teachers realize that it is there.

Wow that could have been a really bad situation. I don't understand why a teacher would get anything with peanuts in it. As a parent that makes goody bags I make sure I read labels... Especially knowing one of her students is allergic. I would address it ASAP.

As a teacher anything with peanuts scares me because you just never know!

I'm surprised in that gift choice!

Re: So..I know this was innocent, but..

I joked with DH that maybe she doesn't like Johnny very much and its her way of letting him know Chat Icon

I do think it was a 100% honest mistake and she didn't see the words "peanut butter". I bet she grabbed it right before school started...I'm just glad they didn't let the kids have those candies in class!!! THAT is the thought that worried me the most!

I made it a point to speak with his teachers yesterday about it. Just so something like this would not happen.

Re: So..I know this was innocent, but..

oh wow that is so scary. it's not like it was "processed in a lab that contains peanuts"--it had peanut butter filling!!!!!! that's crazy!

i'm sure it was completely innocent, but you definitely need to say something. she probably thought she was doing something nice, but it could have had a really bad ending.Chat Icon

thank goodness you checked them

I completely agree. Yes - innocent but that is a huge, huge deal.

Glad you caught it - had you not, you would have been having a very different conversation.Chat Icon

Re: So..I know this was innocent, but..

I'm sure she was just trying to be nice and her intentions were good..

But that really is weird..

I'm not a teacher and I automatically figured V-day gifts for DS's preschool should have no PB and no chocolate..

He didn't get ANY PB but some parents gave chocolate.

I'm kind of suprised the teacher would even consider PB at all..

The babysitting at my GYM doesn't allow PB.. it's quite a no-no.
