solar panels- tax credit

Anyone know how this 30% credit works? if we do panels, are we getting 30% as like a cash refund at tax season, similar to the child tax credit?

We did it a few years ago. As long as you don't owe, you should get it as a refund at tax time. When we filed, and I don't know if this is still the case, there was a maximum credit for the year we could take for the solar. So we had to claim the max credit that year, and the remainder of the credit the following year. IDK if that makes sense the way I am explaining it.
