some good political news
Michelle’s Law (H.R. 2851) was signed into law by President Bush October 9th. It requires that health plans continue to provide coverage for certain dependent children who take a medically necessary leave of absence from a post-secondary educational institution.
The legislation was brought forward by the mother of a NH girl who was a FT college student and was diagnosed with colon cancer. she had to remain a FT student while being treated in order to stay on her parents plan. she ultimately lost her battle. her mom has pushed this issue.
I found out about this bill from the American Cancer Society while it was being considered by Congress. I couldn't believe that if a kid in college had to take time off because they get cancer or some other illness, that ins companies could kick them off their parents' plan bc they are no longer students.
in a time where so many of us are frustrated with politics/politicians, i am happy to see a good law and a needed law pass Congress and be enacted!

Re: some good political news
this is wonderful.
and just to turn this political, something like this is why the McCain plan is dangerous.
*This IS NOT from a cite or a person. this is MY understanding of McCains plan and what *could* happen with deregulation. sorry if that was unclear.
if states are left to "regulate" and one state decides NOT to mandate something like this to ins companies to keep them and jobs in their state, many ins. companies could flock to that state, and students like Michelle will be back where they started.
just food for thought.

I'm sorry...but it's a very good example to use
I don't say WHO has a better plan, I just want people to understand what the McCain plan means to them, besides "choice" and a tax break.
If you like, I'll delete it and start another thread.

Re: some good political news
Ophelia, can you please post a cite? It's not my understanding that McCain's plan woud make health insurance companies immune to all existing federal regulations... I'd just like to read more.
Thanks.

Thanks.
it's my understanding of McCain's own plan. I am not citing anyone. sorry if that was unclear.
what is unclear is exactly how far McCain will actually go in terms of giving up rights to the state.
