some (unsolicited) advice for winter moms-to-be
just some suggestions, given my recent experience, about buying clothing for your child when you're worried about the cold:
-buy pajamas with feet!! socks and booties are cute, but it's a struggle to keep them on since babies love to rub their feet together
-nightgowns are nice in theory because it's easier to change your baby in the middle of the night, but they can ride up and then your little one's feet can get cold
- zippers are MUCH easier to negotiate in the middle of the night than snaps. carter's makes cute fleece pajamas that zipper up which are awesome
-wearable blankets are great, but using one makes it hard to strap your child into stuff, like the swing (because you can't easily get the strap in between the baby's legs). so i've gotten more use out of heavier pajamas that don't require any blanket at all
hope this helps some of you who are shopping for your lttle ones!

I am going to add some advice too...as the mother of a January baby. (never again, next baby is being conceived for warmer times)
Sleeping bags are fantastic. This kind of thing, I used them from about 6 weeks old and we have one now for 2 years. Love them.

Re: some (unsolicited) advice for winter moms-to-be
This info. is very helpful! I'm actually a little nervous about having a winter baby.
Question for the BTDT moms: how do you handle snowy days? Is it a day when you just sit inside all day, or do you brave the elements (with DC) to accomplish what you need to get done?
Thanks!

I lived in the city when my daughter was first born, and not only did I take her out, I took her out in a stroller (gasp!) since parking was more work than it was worth. Unless there is a ridiculous wind, I wouldn't worry any day above 25 degrees, just dress right (and use a clear plastic cover on the stroller -- I used to call it the biodome!)

Re: some (unsolicited) advice for winter moms-to-be
I was out everyday in the winter with my newborn (January baby) and I just bundled the little sausage up. I had a snow suit and he had a hat, he had a blanket over him, and if it was blowy I used a rain cover (I had a Bugaboo and its got a brilliant raincover) If the weather was terrible, I went out in my car, but in general, I walked everywhere.
They are hardy little creatures.

Re: some (unsolicited) advice for winter moms-to-be
Thanks very much for the info- I'm due in Feb., so very helpful. I'm also going to get a fleece lined sling baby carrier- I think they're made by Kozy Karrier or Kangaroo Karrier or something like that.

Re: some (unsolicited) advice for winter moms-to-be
Thanks for the advice and suggestions! I have been wondering if it's okay to take a newborn out for at least short walks in the winter--I'm due Dec. 1st, so I think I'd go nuts by the end of the winter if I don't get out of the house a bit.
The clothing suggestions are great too. Thanks for the post!

Re: some (unsolicited) advice for winter moms-to-be
I definitely agree about the socks. We only tried to have him wear socks once!
I happen to like the gowns but my baby is small and the gowns are so long on him that there is no chance of his feet getting cold in them yet.
