Someone explain the cheese thing to me

so it just needs to be pastureized? Isn't all cheese in our country pasturerized. My Dr. said from the supermarket is okay, but if you go to say a diner, how do you know? I am SO craving a greek salad right now HELP!

Re: Someone explain the cheese thing to me

When in doubt ask. I seriously doubt a restaurant would take a chance serving non pastuerized things to patrons, even non pg people can get sick from things that pastuerization kills.

An italian deli near me in CT got in big trouble for using non pastuerized milk to make mozzarella, like 100 people got sick. They got some hefty fines and the board of health checks up on them.

I eat greek salads from the diner, yuM!

99% of all cheese is pastuerized. It's the imported cheese you have read the label for.

ENjoy that greek salad!! I miss the greek salads from the diner by my parents on LI! They make them the best!

Most imported cheese are also pasteurized to make the trip.

It will be on the label. I would ask if you are going to a restaurant.

Imported cheeses are not always pasturized. Domestic are. Soft cheeses present the biggest "danger" Things like Brie, Gorgonzola & other soft cheeses are on the Hot List.

They are on the "hot list" but you can get them pasteurized at the grocery store. I have had pasteurized brie since I have been pregnant.

Re: Someone explain the cheese thing to me

Like everyone has said, most cheese is ok. If you go to a gourmet shop or Whole Foods, Fairway type place, just dont by cheese that is labeled Raw Milk.
Even most soft cheeses bought are pasturized so they are ok too. I have probably eaten my body weight in Brie in the past 7 months!!!
