Edie was dead from the choking/car accident/electrocution
She narrarated the episode, and it was the other girls, Bree, Susan, Lynette, Gabbie and Mrs. Maclusky driving 4 hours to Edie's son's school to tell him the news. Edie's "husband" thought it would be best if THEY did it because he never met her son.
On the way they all reminisced about the great things Edie did for them at one time or another.
When they told the son, he basically didn't care, saying that his mother abandoned him by giving him to the father when they got divorced.
Her son didn't want the ashes, so they all took some and dumped it on their front lawns so her resting place would always be Wisteria lane.

I don't watch desperate housewives but just wanted to let you know youcan watch all the abc shows for free just go to abc.com my dvr didn't tape lost a few weeks ago and that's how i watched it.
