Sometimes she just amazes me...
This age is just phenomenal - it boggles my mind how quickly she picks up EVERYTHING.
Every night after I gave her a bath and put her in her PJ's, Alex asks to say goodnight to daddy, so I always bring her into the other room where she gives him a big hug and says goodnight.
Well, safta is in town for the last few days, so the night before last, when I brought Alex out to say goodnight, I leaned in and told her she should say "Lila Tov" instead of goodnight, to Safta (means goodnight in hebrew). Alex ran over to Safta, gave her a big hug and said "lila tov safta"
Last night we were eating dinner, and Alex was rubbing her eyes and yawned, so I turned to her and asked, Alex are you sleepy? She looked at me and said "Lila tov mommy"
I think it's time for DH to start speaking hebrew to her, considering how quickly she picks it up now!

WOW!!
Yes, now is the time for a second language.
Her greatest ability to pick one up is by age 6.
We do it completely backwards in US schools... kids should be learning secnd languages in daycare and early school years, not starting in middle school.

TOTALLY agree!
Problem is, DH doesn't speak hebrew to her! The school she's in has a hebrew immersion program, but it starts at age 3 - I'm going to get on his case again about it tonight.

Re: Sometimes she just amazes me...
Again, if you lived closer you could drop her off at my MIL's house.
MIL only knew Hebrew until she went to NYC public schools.
FIL knows some but bascially makes up some words. I never know if the word is actually Hebrew or one of his words that sounds like Hebrew

Re: Sometimes she just amazes me...
Beth I totally agree.
By the time we left Israel Talia was counting to 3 in hebrew, say thank you, good night and good morning all on her own!!!
FINALLY Dh is convinced that she will learn so he is talking to her in hebrew more since we are home.
They are just amazing little sponges.
I should also add that my cousins 2 year old doesn't speak a word of english..but when we left she was saying thank you, pretty, cat, and a few other words as well!

Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwww See, that almost, *ALMOST* makes me want to go back to Israel That's it - tonight I'm talking to DH about it, and today I'm looking into taking a hebrew class or two. Maybe if I learn some, it will help DH feel more comfortable speaking it at home.

Re: Sometimes she just amazes me...
Yes, tell DH to speak Hebrew to her- and quickly!
My dad is Israeli and never spoke to me in Hebrew- I am familiar with the language and can understand a basic conversation but I am nowhere near fluent AT ALL- such a shame! He says he was trying to learn English so he learned it along with me!

Re: Sometimes she just amazes me...
She is definitly one smart cookie!! She will probably be speaking hebrew in no time if your DH is consistant with her plus I think you mentioned a few times she has an emersion program at school too. Just becareful they don't start talking about you . I worked with someone once who was russian and her DH was american. She taught her DD russian and would only speak russian to her(the mother) and would often speak about her dad to her mother in russian. Of course she corrected her daughter but it was funny how she knew how to talk about him.

I agree, tell your DH to speak to her in Hebrew. This is the age where it will be the easiest for her to pick it up.
I have a coworker who is speaking only Chinese to her DS at home, and says he will learn English in school. She said her older DD did the same and now is fluent in both, and had no problem "catching up" with her English-speaking classmates and is probably ahead of most of them now!

Re: Sometimes she just amazes me...
I think its a great idea.
As a child of Israeli parents who barely understands, let alone speaks Hebrew, I can't tell you valuable it would be in my life if I did.
DH is starting to talk to her more in Hebrew now. Its amazing. She says "Shalom" now and I hope he will continue to speak to her in Hebrew. I told my mom to do so also.
That's great! You should totally do that.
