Soooo can we talk ringworm?? -- Oops it's ROUNDworn

Just got a message that Scout has it. I have to pick up his meds tomorrow.

I am going to research right now but does anyone have any info or experience with this??

Update: He has roundworm, not ringworm. Apparently we missed a few of his heartworm treatments. He is getting meds now tho.

I actually had this when i was younger. My clothes had to be washed seperately from everyone else's, and i had it in the sumer so i was not able to go swimming. Wash any blankets or anything Scout may lay on. Wash them seperately. Keep him away from the baby too as this is very contagious. Wash your hands thouroughly after coming in contact with Scout and just be careful. There isn;t too much else you can do. He should be fine with the meds. There is only so much you can do to prevent it from spreading to you and your family. Just becareful and wash evrything Scout has laid on.

Kara...I just spoke to our vet _Espresso has a UTIChat Icon - and he said it's contagious but not highly contagious.
I would definitely ask your pediatrician about it.

Re: Soooo can we talk ringworm?? -- Oops it's ROUNDworn

Hi Kara - My cat had it when we first adopted him. They gave him 2 pills (about $16 each from the vet). He started 'passing' the worms and it was no problem.

The vet said it was contagious to people - because the eggs are sticky and can be ingested orally. We were just sure to wash our hands when we touched him. The vet said that it wasn't a problem because an adult digestive system is alot stronger than a cat's system.

I would keep the baby away from the dog until you know he is dewormed.

How did you know Scout had them? Do they test dogs everytime you take them to the vet?

He went for his yearly check-up. He is only a year old so they did a stool sample, I guess because these parasites are fairly prevalent in puppies, since their immune systems are still underdeveloped.

We got meds for him ($27) and have to take another stool sample in 6 weeks. This is why I got married, so I wouldn't have to do the yucky stuff Chat Icon

The vet said to wach our hands often, and we always clean up as soon as he poops so there is nothing in the yard. We'll just have to keep an eye out for those suckers -- sure hope DH finds them instead of me!! Chat Icon

Porter had roundworm when we first got him. He went for a check up they took his stool, gave us heartworm pills and sent us home. I gave him his pill and the next day when he pooped, YUCK! i was the one to find it. I was calling my vet to tell her he had round worms at the same time she was calling me to tell me he it. BLAH! Lets just say there are certain things i will never eat again.

Yogi got ringworm when he was a puppy. Apparently it is very common. Yogi got it because he ate a stray cats poop at my IL's house. The vet gave him meds and they went away.

I think intestinal parasites are common in puppies. Denver had giardia when we first got him. You just have to make sure to wash your hands often and are careful with Alex. Denver went through a round of meds and the vets checks his stool every year and thankfully, it has never come backChat Icon

Riley had roundworms when we first got her. The vet said they are common in puppies.
She was on meds for two weeks and we had to pick up her poop, b/c roundworms are harmful to humans and other animals.
So make sure you pick up his poop!
