Sorry gross question?
A week or so ago my dog kept licking his anal area---I brought him to the vet and she cleaned out his anal glands....she said they were not bad at all and was suprised at how often I reported he was licking his anal area (sorry for using the word anal so often but I dont know what else to call it ) Anyway he is still licking it frequently and today I caught him scooting on the deck. I have checked his poop and do not see anything out of the ordinary. Can anyone explain what this behavior is????? TIA

Re: Sorry gross question?
Does he eat grass? Maybe he is getting pieces of grass stuck in his butt and is trying to get them off...

Re: Sorry gross question?
No worms? I am not sure about dogs, but I know cats do this if it is worms.

He will eat anything that is not nailed down. He has eaten grass/leaves/small branches but I pull them away from him asap!! I also caught him this week eating the stuffing out of one of his toys--can that contribute to this? Anything I can do for him?

I am assuming you would be able to see them, can you?

Same exact thing happened w/ my dog and since they did that for her, she's been after it even worse! She has been eating alot of grass too. She was checked and free of any worms/parasites.

Re: Sorry gross question?
Misty eats grass and sometimes - sorry this is going to be wayyyyyyyy TMI - it gets kind of stuck halfway out her anus. When this happens, she starts scooting and squatting trying to get it out. We just usually pull it out if we are there, but she will lick there afterwards cuz I think the grass irritates her.
If he eats grass, that may be the problem and I don't think there is much you can do about it.

Thank you for all the information. I think this might be the problem. I am going to try and keep a closer eye on him when we are outside.

This happens to Gus too...and after I "remove" the grass for him...I wipe his tushy with a baby wipe...I know it sounds ridiculous, but since I started doing it, it's stopped his licking and scooting...I think it feels soothing and clean, and then he doesn't have to do the other stuff....give it a try...it can hurt them.

HAHA It is so funny you wrote that. I baby wipe Milo every time after he goes to the bathroom! I am a little bit OCD like that!
