Sorry if this has been posted, but IRS telling you to wait to file your taxes...

I heard on the news that the IRS will be rejecting claims from anyone who files their taxes that has itemized deductions or teachers who claim the educator deduction or people who write off their mortgage interest, etc. if they file before a certain date.
I didn't get all the info, but does anyone know what is up with that? I usually do my taxes as soon as we have all our paper work, which is now, and now I can't do them yetChat Icon I haven't read anything about it yet, so forgive me if I am seeming slightly ignorant on the subject. Has anyone else heard about this?

I heard about it a couple of weeks ago. I don't remember the details but I think you have to wait until mid-february for all the tax codes to be updated or something like that.

My accountant told DH that he can't do anything with our paperwork until after February 15th due to the new changes.

Our accountant had to cancel our appt and since he is completely booked we jumped on the first available appt. He didnt mention anything and told us we can expect our deposit in 2 weeks.

Ditto.

We're having ours done on Saturday, but our accountant can't file them until after February 15.

Mid-late February

I read that "If you itemize deductions on your taxes, the IRS is asking you to wait until mid- to late-February to submit your tax return because of legislation passed late in December 2010. This applies to taxpayers claiming:

* Itemized deductions on Schedule A, which includes mortgage interest, charitable contribution deductions, medical and dental expenses and state and local taxes.
* The Higher Education Tuition and Fees Deduction taken on Form 8917, but not the American Opportunity Tax Credit or the Lifetime Learning Credit.
* The Educator Expense Deduction taken on Form 1040, Line 23 and Form 1040A, Line 16."

99% of our accountant clients are teachers. I wonder why he never mentioned this to usChat Icon

What happens to the claims that are filed prior to 2/15. Will they be returned of just kept on the side until 2/15?

Every year we go on 2/15. EVERY year. This year because of a cancellation we went last Sunday/ FIGURES.Chat Icon

They changed some of the tax laws and they won't take effect in their computer system until mid-Feb so if you file before then it will be rejected. However, if you're a Turbo Tax user you can file at any time before then and they will hold your return until the IRS says it's okay to send it. Chat Icon

I know...it sux! All these rules!

I asked my Acct if he wanted to reschedule after the 15th and he said hed rather get everything together. No need in waiting. This way once the 15th comes, itll be part of the first batch to be sent out. And Ill probably still have to wait 6 months for my refund! Chat Icon

Feb 15, from what I understand, you can file them and they just will not be processed until after the 15th.

Thanks everyone for the info. I appreciate it! I never really watch the news, so I was glad I happened to catch that part of it.

I did hear this. But many people I teach with did not so I have been informing them. It isn't too bad. If you file in 2 weeks usually you will get your return within 2 weeks so in a month all will be said and done. We usually do ours around mid February anyway by the time we get all of our paperwork together.

If our accountant filed already and the IRS rejects it will he able to resubmit our paperwork on the 15th? Or is there a denial process?

I'm guessing this is why I haven't gotten the document that shows I paid tuition last year? Chat Icon
