Sort of a spin off, more of a suggestion
I was reading through the post about what would you take from your home if you had to leave in five minutes. I know I could have left this in there, but I thought it worthy enough for it not to get lost on page three.
Here is my suggestion. If you can, put all of your pictures on a CD or DVD and leave them at a relatives house or a friends house. In the case of fire, burglary or any damage at all, all your pictures are in another safe place.

But what if something happens to the safe haven you've chosen? I guess you could get like a big safety deposit box.

Then you replace it. It is a back up in case something happens to your home.
Not everyone gets a five minute notice to pack up and leave.

Great idea! Thanks!!!
I really have to get this together. I have most of the recent things on shutterfly (last 5 years or so) but the old pics....I guess scan and save them.

I have 20GB of photos/movies now, and rising quickly.... DVDs aren't an option. I put them on external disks at home and at work.

I have all my pics scanned onto a web managed program. I also have discs in my lock box.

Re: Sort of a spin off, more of a suggestion
That's what I started to do after our house fire.
I got a box just for that kind of sentimental stuff.
I scanned all our old photographs, and special memory items (cards, love letters, anything that I would be heartbroken to lose) and burned them on CD.
Another tip - take pictures of the valuables in your house and attach receipt copies to the back.
Trust me, you won't remember everything when the insurance company asks you.

Re: Sort of a spin off, more of a suggestion
I have them on a portable laptop hd which is in our firesafe. I only update them once every few months though. So if something were to happen we would have a few months of missing photos.
