Sorta House Related....it figures
Well we heard all the horror stories on here about people moving in & then the boiler breaks down or the roof leaks & thankfully we haven't had any of those issues but then my car's check engine light came on this week & after bringing it in we find out its the transmission & will run us between $3300-$3700.... just great...& just in time for Christmas too

How about getting another shop to look at it. At least it would ease your mind. Trannies are that expensive, but maybe the check engine light meant something else.

definitely seek a 2nd opinion.... once I was quoted 800 for a new radiator, when the problem really cost 30 to fix... it was a hose attached to the radiator

I agree with a second opinion. DH was taking his car to a shop and the guy had almost $1000 worth of work that had to be done everytime. The last time he went I made him pick up the car and we took it to my mechanic...ended up costing $150 to fix the car.

Well, it started off even worse. We took it to VW b/c we thought it was the catalyst converter (the manual said the flashing engine light could mean that...just that day we get an extended warranty from VW re: that same problem). So we bring it in & they tell us its not the catalyst converter but about 5 other problems...(when he told DH, DH said well thanks, we'll be picking it up in an hour----he's very hands on w/ the car & can do most things). WELL, we pick it up & not 2 hours later 3 OTHER lights come on in the car..things we NEVER had an issue w/ before..VW was mad we didn't do the service they requested) & now the car is stalling. DH calls VW LIVID & they say, well, maybe things just got progressively worse. YET How can we prove they did something to the car.
SO, long story short, DH takes it to his dad's mechanic that he's been going to for years & he clears the computer & takes a look & at first found nothing wrong but then found after the car heats up it doesn't kick into 3rd gear. He sends it to HIS transmission guy & he diagnoses the problem & tells us what it'll cost...BUT also tells us he'll warranty it for 3 years.
I did call up VW & they told us the tranny is warrantied up to 5 years, 60k miles...unfortunately we have 70k.
I mean this is the first thing to ever go wrong on the car & its 4 years old & w/ the amt of miles I guess its to be expected. Also DH has done all the other work on car (brakes, antifreeze, sparkplugs, etc.) so we've gotten off easy until now.
Just frustrating....
Now I see why you always need a cushion in the bank (unfortunately we just moved in a month ago & don't have that cushion)

Cindy, I'm so sorry! Car problems just happened to me and DH the last two weeks. First it was my truck and then his car. Both happened while DH was away on a business trip. We also need new tires on both cars before it starts to snow......So I completely feel your pain.
